Sigma Sd Quattro "H" Images

^ Jamie, Well done! Those are some stunning images you've posted. I hope there are more to come in the near future.

Mike, thanks for the nice comment. I've been super busy with a couple of projects and haven't been able to get out much with the Quattro H. But soon!

Mike, are you, Shawn, and me the only SD Quattro H users here on RFF? We could be the smallest club here! :p

I use the Sigma SD Quattro H as well. It is great fun under the right conditions. Image quality is amazing.

^^^ Shawn, those are some dynamite images you posted; in particular I like the macro shots! Well done! Please share more.

Some fabulous pictures posted here!

I have a question: has anybody tried the "blue layer" trick to photograph higher ISOs in B&W? Basically you go into Sigma PhotoPro and go for the blue channel output. I have a DP3M and have gotten pretty good results at ISO 4000, believe it or not. DP3M handheld/braced, f/2.8@1/40th second, ISO 4000.

More detail here, so you can see the artifacts and other details.

If the "H" can do this trick, I'm interested. I love my DP3M, but I would love a handier camera: more battery power, less generated heat, less clumsiness would be nice. I'm a slow shooter, in general, so I'm not super demanding.

SPP with the sd Quattro seems to work somewhat differently for monochrome images. It still has the color mixer but it appears as if the other layers still may have some effect on the top layer. You can get pretty good results at higher ISO in monochrome though.

Boring test shot... lightroom XY comparison of SPP Blue only on the mixer vs. default at 1:2 in lightroom. ISO 3200 from sdQH.

If you want to be sure you are using top layer only use RawDigger and then export the blue layer as a TIFF file.

SPP also has an option to bin the top layer above ISO800 to reduce noise but then you have 1/4 the resolution.

Interesting, Shawn. I'm not sure I was even doing what I did correctly, though it seemed to work. From what I understand, the Foveon sensor in Merrills are layered 1:1:1, versus the 100% blue top layer and fractional (50%?) "under-layers" of the Quattro. I'm liking the idea of getting a SD Quattro, the more I check out the images, though it seems that color might be its strong suit. I guess my Merrill and a Quattro would complement each other.

Thanks for the images and explanation. Okay, I look forward to seeing more pictures!

^^^ Very impressive, Shawn, I love the bee covered in pollen.
