Sigma DP2 Merrill color photos, please!

The colors and the images as a whole are wonderful. Thanks for all the posted images here. I have never used such a camera.
 
It seemed a bit soft for a Merrill and I wondered where the focus was ...

... so I did an edge-detect followed by a threshold filter in the GIMP, voila:

I'm not real sure that edge detection shows the focal plane that well but it's kind of like Contrast Detection AF which the DP Merrill uses, IMHO.

Certainly an interesting subject especially with respect to focus position or depth thereof.

I'm leery, in Jeri's image, that the focus plane is perhaps not the treetops as implied - because of the big difference in local contrast between the top and bottom of the frame.

Of the various common methods (Canny, Sobel, Laplace, Gaussian difference, et al) do you prefer any with reference to image focus measurement?
