A Nikon with a 28 is a powerful tool. Add one more lens of your choice, say the 85/1.8 or 180/2.8, and you have an all-rounder kit that won't break the bank (if you buy good secondhand quality lenses, the camera I would get new) and can still be carried in a backpack without damaging your back.
As a "one and only" lens the 28 is hard to beat. The second lens can be any one you prefer, super wide or tele. I'm not a '50 shooter but many are, to me it's too close to the 28 to be included in a good mix but that's just me. Horses for courses...
