Gerta Pohorylle was born in 1910 in Stuttgart, Germany and in 1934 she went to Paris where she became an assistant to Hungarian photographer Endre Ernö Friedmann. They became lovers and he taught her how to take news pictures. Both were Jewish and had no illusions about the anti-semitism of their times and they changed their names to Gerda Taro and Robert Capa. In 1936 they went to Spain to cover the civil war there. Taro was killed on a battlefield in July 1937 and her funeral in Paris was attended by thousands who considered her a modern Joan of Arc. This is the first major exhibition of her work and it is way overdue, believe me. She was talented.

The exhibit runs until January 6, 2008 and I'm hoping to go to NYC to see it myself. The catalog arrived in the mail yesterday and it just really well done as many of the individual photos are also displayed in the context of the magazines they were published in. There are many very good pictures, she was an ardent supporter of the Republican cause and her photos do reflect that as they are all of the Republican experience in the conflict. There are also pictures of the backs of some of the photos and Taro and Capa both have their names on some. One has Robert Capa's Magnum stamp on it but scrawled on the back is a note that it was taken by Gerda Taro. Apparently their pictures got mixed up and may have been credited to the wrong person in some cases. I can certainly recommend the book ($26.40 from Amazon) and I would be interested to hear from any NYC members who have visited the exhibit.
