I'm sure it is art, Bertram. Not convinced? Here's what Mr Bernhard Mendes Bürgi wrote in a recent essay on Andreas Gursky. Mendes Bürgi must know, he himself is the Director of the Basel Art Museum. Ok, here (my attempt at translating his art lingo from German, not easy sorry ...) : "The large photographs of Andreas Gursky capture living spaces in a subtle way, without imposing any interpretative elements upon them. Despite all their realistic presence, his photographs by means of consequent reduction and structuring allow for an abstract reading which can reach far beyond the plain description of concrete objects and actions." I think this is what's putting art in it, and it's exactly what many of Swann's photographs achieve in a exemplary manner; and it's as well why I like many of those so much. Habe fertig.
