the joy of photography

There's very little importance placed on the gallery here IMO.

I guess that's why some people here like to stress that RFF is about gear, not about photography.

I visit the gallery every day and see the same old contributors uploading images and the same old members passing comments on those images.

I'm a new guy on RFF and I have just uploaded my first image to the gallery. (It took some time to figure out how to shrink a picture to the size maximally allowed in the gallery while keeping it from getting too small.) I shiver in expectation... :)

I seldom post anything on RFF but I sure do enjoy it, enjoy most of the people on it, enjoy the mods and think they do a great job! I guess that's why I log in usually every day just to see what my favorite folks have to say about this or that! I'm very happy with RFF and will continue to log in daily if possible.
Regards,
Tom Harrell

Same here. Having travelled and lived in different cultures I've learned that speaking out can lead to misunderstandings and one has to listen carefully before making judgements. RFF is a global forum, with people from many backgrounds, so it is not surprising that there are differing perceptions of postings. However, I have found most members, no matter what their country of origin, are usually aware of this and are very polite. There are posters that seem to deliberately inflame, but overall I have learned a great deal and have a lot of respect for the advice of members and will continue to visit. We all owe a lot of gratitude to the hard working mods.

(now bracing for an attack :D)

Comment duly left! :D

RFF is about gear, although, like Keith, I browse the galleries--never comment though. I came back to get some information about a purchase and found what I needed in already posted treads. For the information I received, I helped folks with what I know by posting.

But RFF is an internet public forum. It is not a community as there is no interdependence among the membership. And, for the most part, the members are anonymous and so it is a dodgy place. This is not an arena for personal/private information.

RFF today is what it was when I joined. Nothing has changed.

Dear Joe, back alley, or whoever it is, please have the respect and civility to explain me, here, or in PM why my last two posts have been deleted.

Thank you.

you are being judgemental about other members in a thread where i am asking for civility and respect.

let the mods do their jobs.

I came here because I got my Kodak Retina and was recommended from my friend. I like RFF because there are a lot nice people here including all of you.

Roger,
One reason I use flickr is because they have huge storage, security setting on the photo. flickr also ask to link back to the page if we use direct link of the image.

I focus on photography, I feel happy when take a photo and enjoy reading here very much.

I don't think this is a gear forum... There are lots of experienced shooters around, and kind enough as to share their hardly acquired knowledge... We all care for gear, because gear is a pleasure too, and all of us talk about it sometimes, yes, but this is a forum about photography: gear, films, digital, aesthetics, books, photographers, off topic, philosophy, everything... And in my opinion it's the best forum in the world.

Cheers,

Juan

I agree, this is a great place for those who love photography.

Ruby, Joe is a great mod, and he lets people play around a lot, and he seldom acts as a mod deleting anything... You shouldn't attack him in public: he's doing his job. I didn't read your posts, but he's a person everybody trusts, and he's always clear: he never has two faces, and that's very important. He says what he thinks. Let's all forget it and keep cool: if we calm down, here there's room for all of us...

Cheers,

Juan

So other members can say "f*ck 'em, the arseholes. they're drunk or off their meds"? and this is not judgemental?

I just had a PM from another member warning me to say no bad of the VIP.

I guess VIPs can say what they want.

i call them as i see them, and i am not about to argue the point here.

roger is a well respected and proven member of this forum.

gdi, yours is the hardest to discern avatar I've ever seen... It took me several seconds... I guess I need a bigger screen... :)

Cheers,

Juan

For what its worth, a larger version of the avatar ( sheep gets sheared)..

Some of those were directed at me and joe called it correctly, I'm a big boy now, I can debate without getting angry, it is others who cannot

Discussions on an internet forum are a bit like discussions between blindfolded strangers. We have none of the non-verbal, body language, clues that might temper nasty reactions. Still, non-photographic discussions here don't generate anywhere as much venom as they do elsewhere. Most are about American politics, and the discussions here reflect the polarized state of affairs in this country. Once someone stakes out a position identified as "wrong" by the opposing side, everything else they say is also attacked, regardless of its reasonability or accuracy. This quickly leads to attacks on the person, which invariably prompt heated, often angry, responses. Still, I wouldn't like to see those discussions vanish from RFF. I agree with Roger that they give us a chance to "meet" people with all sorts of opinions from all parts of the globe. Less bad behavior would be welcome, though.

The emotion generated by the film/digital thing continues to mystify me (and I was thick in the middle of the last thread). I understand having a preference, especially if you shoot professionally. I can, with effort, understand why someone might advocate for one or the other. However, I'm flummoxed that people become so personally invested in one or the other that they allow their emotions to get the better of them.

You misunderstand. Those words were written in this thread about certain anonymous members.

Well you weren't too cool last night with Nick.

IMHO

...

your opinion, one which i do not share.

if you continue to persue this line of posting and continue in your quest to be right you will be banned. consider this your only warning.

Sorry I didn't know that, I misunderstood ...

... and yes Nick aims to be provocative, and he'll succeeded occasionally, I don't recall being abusive or angry, I simply replied in kind

as far as politics and religion, stephen has stated quite clearly that they have no place at rff.

I know he has, Joe.

Which has much added to my frustration when reading the many very active political threads in the recent past, in which (mostly the same, and sometimes prominent) members add their obviously controversial opinion. Things like American healthcare, gay marriage laws, a member's democratic vs. republican standing, or standing up against oppression in Tibet have nothing to do on RFF, IMO (unless you do it via photos ...). Some members have openly stated that they use RFF to express and promote their political opinions with no interference from site owner or moderators.

The other thing that bothers me is frequent emphasis of money, gear prices, assumptions about what other members can afford or not, etc., often implying that "if you can buy camera XYZ", you have the right to look down on everybody else.

I used to come here to get away from propaganda. And to find a healthy mix of gear description, photographic process and photography. I learned a lot. However, we continue to loose good photographers, who used to share photos and describe how they were done.

Gear and good photography may not be directly related. Whatever. I'm fully convinced however, that one's political opinion or budget have nothing to do with one's photographic output.

You have a tough job, Joe. But I do recommend to systematically close political threads as they show up; and act firmly against rude post(er)s.

And for the teachers: wisdom and modesty often grow together. My deepest respect to Bill P. and Tom A. We can all learn from them.

Roland.

I hate that other thread got closed. I think you were right in having the op to produce some photos to prove his point. The two he did post were quite horrible. The late evening photo (with the bluish tint) that he stated couldn't of been shot by any film camera I was ready to disagree with. & the b&w photo of the elderly man in the rocking chair was quite flat. Why earlier I stated as far as digital goes the RD-1 would be a much better street camera. Oh well! that's life around here. I tend to take everything with a grain of salt. People who flame me & think I'm a religious nut don't bother me one bit either. I enjoy the diversity around here. I don't try to cram my faith down anyone's throat but I don't keep it in a box either. If you believe in something you should share it. We're humans, not robots! I'm constantly amazed how we are expected to stay on the topic of photography, when it's a medium that expresses such a diverse culture & lifestyle. Say if someone post a photo they took of President Obama. No doubt, soon the topic will start a derision between folks & eventually the thread will get shut down. The libertarian side of me is, if it ain't hurting anything or anybody keep it going!:)
