In an average size box with styro peanuts, 35SP chrome or black weighs under 2 lbs. Both are "commercial grade" and exactly the same except for finish. John

He's not far off the mark.....

He's not far off the mark.....

Easy to jump on these folks, but he does have a commodity that sells for a lot more on eBay.

Now of course, knowledgable folks like yourself probably wouldn't step up to the "Black" surcharge, but many do. Granted, it's no different in operation than the chrome/silver models, but it's unique. There were certainly not as many black models, but they were made in limited numbers from Olympus, Canon (the black GIII), Petri (The black Petri 35), and others.

They are beautiful camera's to some people and in the period of time they were made, black models were usually only found in Professional Grade cameras, such as Canon F1, Nikon, and others.

I follow these cameras closely. The last black 35SP I saw a couple of years ago sold for $450. I've seen black Canon QL17 GIII's sell for up to $600. I sold one a few years ago for $350.
I sold a black Petri 35 Color for $300. I sold a non-working black Yashica Electro 35 about 6 months ago for $75, as a parts camera. Working, these are $25 cameras day in and day out, IN SILVER.

For most of the people on these camera forums, it's about the camera's. For the people on eBay, it's about the money.

As far as the weight... Well, if I put that camera in a 12x12x12 box, pad it and fill it with peanuts, it's going to weigh out at the post office at least 3 pounds, and that's the description on how it said it would be shipped. Also, the postage won't be significantly different for 2 pounds or 5 pound within the country. It will be more governed by box size and distance sent.

Frankly this person looks like someone who knows what he's got, who puts up a good ad and is informative. He looks like he'll do well on eBay.

The word Rare is used loosely on eBay, but the one that makes me shudder is the eBay coined term... Minty. Drives me up a wall.

I teach eBay classes and except for the RARE term, I would have given this person a "pass" on this listing, assuming it's all as he says.

kuzano, thanks for your insights.

This all may be further proof of an expression a childhood friend liked to quote: "You're good for as much as you can get."

Perhaps I'm just bitter because I sold most of my 'classic' RFs cams before the RF Renaissance which I think was started and continues to be supported by Dr. Gandy. It took me a couple months to sell a pristine black QL17 GIII kit (complete with hood) for US$100 and my SP (with original case) for ~US125.

BTW, another seller, with the revelatory name 'camera$', is offering a "HighGrade" SP with a BIN of US $448.00. But wait! The price has been slashed, slashed to only US $313.60. I'll resist only because this one is boring old chrome instead of a "blacktop".

As a follow up, the one I originally questioned -- the "rare" "blacktop" -- sold for US $204.05.

Say, I have a Petri Color Computer 35. Am I sitting on a gold mine? :D

Actually, its a nice and compact RF with a pretty good lens. I almost never use it, like a lot of cameras I have, but I don't think I would get rid of it either.

Black FL RF's phenomena is interesting. Professional or not, kuzano explained things well. Personally I like if black body camera has also black shutter release and rewind lever, like little Yashica Electro I have does. Black finish is nice but for me it's not selling point. Probably those who dreamed about black RF in their 17's but had to go for silver model, today are ready to make their old dream come true. Nothing wrong with that.

I think some cameras, mainly available in black finish, are considered RARE in silver finish and sell for more than black. Old brunette-or-blonde game :)

Word!

Oooo, I bet you just gave voice to what a lot of us say to ourselves . . . :)

Same for me. I like it so much I have two.
Piker ... I got three. Silver top. Too bad they're silver-top and not professional grade.
