In this light I think the FUJIFILM AF would have been equally effective if the dog had black fur.

In much lower light levels less exposure (signal-to-noise ratio) subject radiance becomes more important for every camera's AF system. So, at some point a dog with dark fur in motion must have a higher focus failure rate than dog with light fur.

Increased technical performance increases image information content. Making "petty pictures" and using data with more information content are not mutually exclusive.

At the same time, image rendering aesthetics are have significant subjective elements. Clearly these are important.
