Your thoughts on Nikkor 50/1.8 AI-S Japanese pancake version

Why is the "long nose" known by that name?
Probably somewhat of a misnomer, kind of like how the pancake is not quite pancake? That said, this article cites the long nose's "...recessed element proved to be quite a discerning factor for this lens giving its name."

Richard Haw's repair article also details some of the differences between other 50mm f/1.8 Ai-S variants:

Great articles, thanks for the links! After reading over this thread a few times I managed to find the one with a serial number that starts with a 2, and focuses to .45M, for $99 from a seller in Japan (plus $30 shipping). The ad said it has some dust, but no separation, fog or fungus. Other comparable ones from Japan were about half again as expensive, or even double, so I think mine will have some cosmetic issues. I'm looking forward to receiving it!
