I had one also in my twenties! Lasted forever, cheap parts, cheap maintenance and resold well.

Despite all the nostalgic feelings, my beetle was already technically overhauled:
Too high fuel consumption with low engine power, poor rust protection, poor distribution of storage space, poor indoor heating...
Even if the rear engine was beneficial on snowy roads, this distribution of weight could led to dangerous rotations at treacherous icy road conditions.

I remember when I had my VW I always thought the engine was 1.200 cc, with the power of a 600 cc and fuel consumption of a 1.800 cc !
But I was 20 and ti was my car!
