Description:

Do any RFF members remember Don Chatterton?  He is no longer with us, having passed away in 2015.  I didn't know him personally, but I bought this 50mm Version II Summillux from him.  He was one of the best to buy Leica gear from!

Now, on to the lens itself.  I was in the process of acquiring all the Leica gear I thought I wanted.  I had wanted one of these for a long time.  I bought it from Don.  I used it, I believe three times to walk to a local restaurant and photograph some outdoor diners eating at sidewalk tables.  But I'm not into available darkness.  It has sat in my Craftsman tool cabinet where I keep My Leica stuff for some years now.

The lens has no fungus, no fog, no haze.  The glass is clean and clear.  There is no oil on the diaphagm.  There are no dings, no scratches, and no paint loss exept for a tiny spot where the hood slides on.  I took pictures with the lens rotated 90 degrees at a time, so you can see everything.  The aperture ring and focus both turn with the appropriate balance of ease and firmness.  It focuses correctly both at minimum focus and at infinity.

I wanted a clear filter to keep on it always, to protect the glass, which is flawless.  So I bought a B W UV filter, the MRC one that causes no reflections.  The filter proved to be a little larger than a Leica filter, so the hood (included) would not fit over it.  I still wanted this specific filter, so I had a groove cut in the rim that allows the hood to clamp to the filter rather than the lens.  That works fine both for use and when stowed away reversed.  I'll just throw it in.

A little history:  This is the version 2.  and is the most recent optical design.  Only 9,000 of this type were made before the barrel was changed to add the extensible built-in lens hood, which is convenient, albeit less effective than the 12586.  It is still considered a version II, because there is no optical difference; even though some may refer to it as the version 3.

The Leitz 12586 vented hood with its slotted cap is included.  It's in just as nice condition as the lens itself.  The rear cap is included.

Shipping by USPS Priority Express (next-day delivery) fully insured, is included within the USA.  That will cost me about $60, but I am convinced it's the best way to ship an expensive item.  It will minimize the chance of loss or damage.

I'm selling because  I'm not much into low-light photography.  My Summicron should do from now on.
