When Karr heard the news that Martins appears to have faked his photographs, she was “taken aback,” she said. “It really shocked me in the sense that someone would pretend to go to this place and sort of trivialize and tokenize people’s struggles. … It gives photojournalists a bad name for sure.”
No it doesn't. It gives the editors, staff, and entire news cycle/system a bad name. They didn't do their jobs.

PJs give themselves bad names in plenty of other ways but not by being unknowing victims.

EDIT: I just realised that, for some reason, the WP thought it would be prudent to include this quote from a student. Huh, funny how they deflect and use a bad source to mitigate potential questioning of their own positioning in this.

The problem is anyone can contribute to Getty, Alamy, Rex etc with cutbacks on picture desks no one cares and no one checks.

When the budgets are fake, the payment schedules are fake, the articles are written from a continent away and articles are regurgitated from paper to paper it makes sense the photojournalist is fake too. I mean only a fake photojournalist could survive in this marketplace no?

One guy fakes some photos, a few news agencies fall for it, and that becomes some kind of indictment against modern media as a whole? No. I believe there have been con artists before.

As someone who has worked within the 'machine' I am quite comfortable with anY indictments.

But yes, con men are out there and sometimes plentiful
