Point and Shoot Project/Challenge? Interested?

Point and Shoot Project?

If you're like me you have quite a few P&S film cameras laying around the house. I was thinking about it and it might be fun to put these little elderly gems to work and have a little fun competition with them where we all shoot and show our results. Making the most out of a limited tool could make for some interesting results.

I was thinking that criterion could be:
- Auto Exposure (no f-stop selection)
- Auto or Manual Focus
- Heck, you know what I mean!

Anyway, my Olympus Stylus is winking at me and wants some use. Anyone interested in taking part?

I'm thinking of allowing shooting during the first 2 weeks of March with submission by the end of the month.

Anyone can play…Kodak Disposables are still available if you don't have a P&S camera.

Let me know your thoughts, could be fun!

Kent

Great idea. Some of my best photos last year were taken with cameras like Olympus Stylus aka Mju cameras. I can't help buying tham as they are very capable and dirt cheap if you are lucky. I would be interested.

David,

Good question. If they're old enough and "crappy" or rudimentary by today's standards I'd say yes. This is an inexact definition obviously but I hate to rule out digital shooters.

Example of an old digital that might meet the criteria: I have a Minolta X1 that I think fits the bill. My old Nikon 880 certainly does as well (where is that charger???).

....So no GR-Digitals, people. (Luckily I have a GR1, as well as my probably-should-be-disqualified GRDIII and IV).

My only compacts do have aperture selection, but I'd love to join in (and can just leave the camera in program mode, so it's auto-aperture).

Great, may give me the push I need to run some (old) film through my XA3 or even the MJU I. Now to find some long lasting, intermittent use dev.

This kind of projects is always a great way for "discovering" old and beautiful cameras, often neglected on a shelf

My Pentax UC-1 hasn't been out to play in a while. Sounds like fun! And, If I can find my Agat 18 (), I will use that one.

Are there are rules as to subject matter or a topic for the shots? Or are we free to snap a photo of whatever we wish?

This sounds fun. I'll be honest, the photo contests/challenges here are very daunting usually. Some many of you have such amazing photos that it is very scary to leap in amongst the "pro" level work I see here.

But, I am ready to at least try. So count me in! I have several PnS's I can use for this.

My thought is to keep the subject matter wide open. Lets see what can be done with these little machines!

I might break out one of my APS P&Ss for the occasion.

No problem I have a Leica CM that I'll use instead. Looking forward to using it, it's been a year since it came out of the box.

Not sure if I'd qualify with a Sony Cybershot 5.1 MegaPixels. But if it's quality you're after, still have my fisrt-ever camera: kodak instamatic.

Loved my CM. I only got rid of it as Leica was no longer servicing them and that annoyed me as I had only purchased it new 6 months before or so. That little camera has one quiet shutter too!

I could go with my XA2.

Would digital point and shoot count if we set it to program or auto? If not I saw a Vivitar digital for $10 at Family Dollar. That's got to meet your "crappy" criteria.

Sorry, another gear question:

how about Hexar AF and similar ilk?

(The "Post your Hexar AF photos" RFF thread resides in Point-N-Shoot....)

Acceptable cameras...

I'm easy going on this as this event is meant to be a fun light hearted outing for everyone. My original intent was to use kind of cheap outdated film cameras from the past, not so much "wunderkinds" like the Contax T3, Leica CM & Minilux, Minolta TC-1, Nikon 35TI and 28TI, Hexar AF and the Ricoh GR series. I've owned all but one of those and they're awesome performers but not the kind of struggle to use that I anticipated being part of the project/competition.

That said, they certainly are point and shoots when in P mode (heck, so is my D300 by that definition) so feel free to use whatever you like. I'm not going to be the camera cop on this one, just try to stick with the spirit of the original idea if you can.

The goal from my seat is to see what kind of quality output people can come up using gear that is a bit "rudimentary" or "outdated" by today's standards. If they still made 126 film I'd shoot my childhood Instamatic, which I still have.

Let's Launch This Thing!!!

OK, gang. I've got the submission form up and I accounted for each person being able to upload up to 3 images.

I'm kind of anxious to get this thing moving so why don't we launch it....right now! We can have the shooting window go a month to March 15th so those of us who have to send out strange formats (see APS) can do so and get it back in plenty of time.

If that sounds good let's do it! It's the honor system, try to stay in the intended equipment sweet spot for this fun challenge.

Thoughts?
