Pulled out the 85/1.5 Canon this morning and caught some nice early morning light in the backyard.

This lens is so nice -- completely gets rid of the background at f/1.5-f/2.

Somehow my M-D developed a scratch on its sensor, and Leica NJ had to send it to Germany to be looked at. So it looks like I'll be without my M-D for a while

That's a bummer, hopefully you'll have a quick enough turn around. Nice images above here and very nice tonality in the B&W Jones Falls and Rain shot.

Many thanks -- I think the quality of B&W I can get from this camera is almost on par with what I get from the Monochrom 246.

I have no clue how the scratch got on the sensor -- I've never come close to ever touching it, and any 'sensor cleaning' I've done has been limited to a bulb blower and nothing more. Hopefully they're not going to come back to me with a 4-figure estimate for repair!

Yes, as a MM I user, I'd be hard pressed at times (many times to tell whether an image came from a Monochrom whether 1 or 246 or another camera. And the color images (love the plums) are nice too. Dual Range is a favorite lens; would love to see a DR version of that plate if you haven't already imbibed of them!

Ah unfortunately that DR has been sold on -- it was only with me for a short time. I was selling it for a cousin of mine and only was able to try it out for a couple of weeks. It was very tempting to buy that lens from him, but I didn't see the point of buying a lens that I could only use (on the bodies I have anyways) up to 3ft. But, I am likely to buy that 35/2 goggled Summicron from him, which is a peach of a lens. It's currently being looked at by the Camera Wiz himself to see if the haze can be eliminated. Combine those goggles with the 1.25 magnifier and it's a super view through the viewfinder (and I wear eyeglasses).

And we have no shortage of figs around here -- looks like I'll have to do a Monochrom version for the time being

Agh! Of course they're figs I've been eating those little Italian Plums around here and looking at your plate of figs somehow "plum" came out as I typed. I used to have an eight -element 35 'cron myself. Its value, along with my curiosity to try an early Summilux, and I let it go. Good luck with that one you are looking at.

Recently returned from NYC, where I packed the ZM 35/2 and ZM 50/2. Here's a sampling from the Met and the Village/Washington Square.

Just got my M-D back from Leica. It took a little over 6 weeks for it to go to Germany, get its sensor cleaned (they managed to clean it fine and I guess the scratch wasn't what they thought it was), and send it back. No charge.

So just an FYI -- if you need ANY service to your M-D, be prepared to have it sent to Germany. New Jersey does not service the M-D, so even something as seemingly routine as a sensor cleaning will require that the body be sent to Germany.

Very nice shots Robert! I’m especially drawn to the second colour shot.

It's been a while since I dropped in this thread. WOW. Wonderful images in this thread one and all. Vince love the water swirls and Robert the color photographs in #497 are spectacular as are you B&Ws. #447 love the road trip images Robert as well as the ones one this page. Godfrey I can't leave your work out either. CapitalK and everyone in that posts in this thread the work is very inspiring. Thanks for sharing and I totally get the M-D. Just doesn't look like there is one in my future. Another M 10 (for work) by the end of the year.

Thanks, friends. Being able to slip the M-D SD card into the back of my iMac on the day when I shoot it, and get into culling/development while it’s all fresh, seems to be affecting my work pattern for the good/better, maybe even the best. (After years of tethering this or that camera to download dozens or a hundred images, and getting selection/edit fatigue as though it was a requirement for serious work.)

The shift toward color, though, has been unexpected—a year ago I’d have termed it uncharacteristic. But for decades I also thought depression was my character and fate, and BW seemed the proper tonic against the snappy seemingly false positives in the images and worldviews of more colorful people. As though one has to subtract or rather drain color from one’s way of seeing to compensate for someone else’s appropriation of color to support their sentimentality or mannerism.

I’m glad to be able to reflect on this in your company here, Vince, Godfrey, Allen, since we are unlikely to be able to have a long lunch chat any time soon. Thanks.

Vince: I gotta say, I wrote the OP in this thread kind of scratching my head about the design philosophy on this camera. But I just love what you do with it! So: the proof of the pudding is in the eating, as they say. Just terrific stuff.

Question for you: I was playing around with the DR Summicron on my M9 tonight. I was using a tape measure without the goggles for close-in shots and the distance scale on the camera was dead-on. But mine focuses just fine in the "normal" range. What about the M-D doesn't work with the DR 50? Does the cam not engage for some reason? Or does the focus bind?

Sorry I just noticed your post this morning -- I don't get notifications, and I don't always keep on top of threads.

Well many thanks for your comments -- I think we're all doing pretty fine work here, and the one thing I always said about my personal use of the camera is that I have to justify its ownership. I'm not always successful at it, but I keep trying.

As far as the DR Summicron goes, on the inside of the body, just to the left of the focusing arm, is a bit of a protrusion of the body. I suspect it's for the meter. If you use the lens in the 'normal' range, you can go to about 40" then the cam of the lens will hit that protrusion. I don't know if the body can be modified to accommodate the lens, but for me it's not worth it.

It's a moot point for me now, as I sold the lens a few months back (it belonged to a cousin of mine, and I was selling it on his behalf). I still have the 35/2 V1 Summicron, and that lens is a real peach.

Hah! No worries. I am traveling next week. Tokyo, by way of Montreal (closest airport with a non-stop for many of us in Vermont). The M9 is coming with . . I'm thinking 24-35-50 with maybe the little C/V 15 thrown in the bag. Hope to get in some "seeing" on the streets there. Rural VT is great for many things, but street photography is not one of them.

Frost! What's that? (I have adjusted completely to life in Pacific maritime aka Growing Zone 9b. The windshield scraper is having a permanent nap in the Mazda trunk, while our roses and hydrangeas and Meyer lemons continue to bloom.)

I was back east in mid September. Here's a stream in Old Saybrook close to Long Island Sound.

Every time my friend Joe and I get together for coffee, he's my photo 'guinea pig' of sorts (plus I haven't taken many personal photos lately).

With the 35/2 Version 1 Summicron and the 65/3.5 Elmar/Visoflex III combo.

That last one (above) is well done Vince. The snow radiates the light reflecting off of it to very nice affect!

Many thanks -- I had to go back outside and shoot it about 3 times before I got it right (fortunately it's in my backyard). Our first snowfall of the season!

Shot with the Visoflex III and the 65/3.5 Elmar @ f/11, ISO 400. I metered using an old Gossen Luna Pro that was given to me a few months ago.

It's been ages since I posted an image on RRF. When I just tried now (from my M-D 262), from an image that resides on my computer, all that shows up here is a thumbnail. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Actually I had to use an old Gossen Luna Pro on those snow pictures to be sure of the correct exposure

I’ll be driving back out to New Mexico in early April, so hopefully that will result in some new and worthwhile developmental magic!
