Smallest 50?

Hi all!

Which, apart from the all too obvious collapsible lenses, would be the smallest, most compact 50mm or similar lens in Leica M or M39?
I use an M3 with an M39 Summitar atm, I also have a very scratched collapsible Summicron which I am selling right now, I also have a chrome Summicron-M but that is so very heavy!
I like the Summitar but is there something more compact or even as compact as a collapsed Summitar?
What about a 40mm? A Rokkor maybe?
Thank you
Felix

The 50mm 2.5 Color Skopar is my smallest non collapsing 50. I bet MS Optics has smaller, but they always seem odd to me for some reason.

Yep, 50mm skopar is tiny, especially without the mini hood it comes with. A pretty good performer for the size too.

The Head Bartender has a photo of all the Voigtlander 50s here:
https://www.cameraquest.com/voigtlen.htm

The Nikkor-H.C 5cm f/2 LTM and the Canon 50mm f/1.8 LTM are both quite compact, but I think the Voigtlander 50/2.5 has them both beat in terms of size. Maybe the Canon 50mm f/2.2, which the Canon Lens Hall lists at 33.2mm in length? FWIW, B&H lists the (discontinued) Voigtlander 50/2.5 at 33.6mm.

p.s. The Canon 50/2.2 is perhaps lesser known, but Colton started a thread about the lens here on the forum with many wonderful image samples:

Oh wow, these really are tiny!
Thank you, I will go comparing and shopping now.
If only they came in chrome...

e: hmm, the market seems to be quite empty. too bad.
How about a 40mm Rokkor?
Are these useable?

Well, you have direct experience, whereas I was just quoting your thread.

The Nikkor-H.C 5cm f/2, Canon Serenar 50mm f/1.5, and earlier version Canon Serenar 50mm f/1.8 all come in chrome. Here's the Nikkor on a Barnack:

Not sure about the size difference but the 50mm F2.5 Summarit appears to weigh about 1/2 of what the Nikkor-H.C 5cm f/2 LTM and Summitar 5cm f/2 ltm collapsible.

The Minolta chiyoko rokkor 45mm 2.8 is also very small. It’s almost a 50.

I was just going to mention the little Rokkor 45mm ltm. I don't know how it compares to the Skopar 50/2.5.

Yes, the Nikkor-H.C 5cm f/2 is quite dense for its compact size, about 225g. The older Summarit-M 50mm f/2.5 is a similar weight, approx 230g according to Leica Wiki.

On the other hand, the newer Leica Summarit-M 50mm f/2.4 might take the cake in terms of size and weight. B&H lists it as 33mm in length, but only 105g!
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ..._2_4_lens.html

Comes in your choice of silver or black, but at a price, of course.

The non-collapsible Vintage Line version of the 50mm f3.5 Heliar should be worth looking into, at least the Nikon S-mount version is super tiny.

Jupiter-3. Smallest 1.5 I'm aware of. Size of cron, weights less.
Minolta Rokkor CLE 40 f2 is very small. It has dual inner helicoud part to keep it small.
And it original hoos is not adding to the lens size.
But it is wrong lens on M, IMO.

J-3 on the right. It is right lens after all.

Summicron-C, although a 40 normal as opposed to a 50 normal.

The Canon 50/1.5 is small for a fast lens.

No one mentioned the 40/1.4 Voigtlander Nokton yet ?
Very small, fast when you need it , easily available , standard filters.

Thank you everyone!
The only lens that is plentyful or can even be found on the bay here in Germany is the J-8, others, not so much.
I can get the Summarit 2.4 but not in chrome, I am also not really comfortable with a Rokkor on an M, this seems to be quite difficult.
The little 3.5 Heliars look wrong if I'm honest.
I will stick to my Summarit for now and maybe I can find a decent Color Skopar some day.
Thank you!

I agree. If 40mm makes sense, that's a great option.

I have that lens albeit in S-Mount and it appears to be longer than a Color-Skopar 50/2.5. I would recommend the latter as a compact 50mm lens.

I agree with Gabor here. The Color Skopar is also mechanically much better than the later Leica Summarits f/2.5 and f/2.4.

Interesting. I already have the LTM Color Skopar 2.5/35, which is very nice. No experience with the 50.
