I shoot Leica because....

...of the 'schick' sound the shutter makes when it exposes. Heavenly!

Happy for you. I hope you have a few other reasons. My M3 is a smooth machine.

I may shoot a digital Leica rangefinder because I can't handle manual focus with focus peaking assist through an electronic view finder.

I like the heft of the camera bodies. Also, shooting an unmetered body makes me feel smart.

They're right you know, girls do like Leicas. Even my non-descript Monochrom got a comment from the girl who makes wonderful coffee around the corner. My chrome M5 draws more comments from them than any other. Size does matter perhaps.

Film M, e.g M2:

1. RF focussing.
2. VF large and clear.
3. Quiet shutter
4. Hand holdable slower speeds.
5. Simple manual controls for exposure.
6. Fast lenses, very compact.
7. Tabbed lenses with DOF markings for scale focus by sight or feel.
8. M mount Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses

Digital M, e.g. M9:

1 and 2 above; and, if you hadn't come from a film Leica, 3 above; 5 and 6 above, and 6,7 and 8.

9. Small full frame 35mm body.
10. Kodak sensor.

Seems every year we have two or three threads about why we shoot Leica..

Because I can't shoot any other camera that well..

Because it attracts other camera nerds and we can then talk about Summilux's.

Same here. My chrome M5 has received far more attention than my black M5 body. From chicks... and that is unexpected.

I've been using Leica since I was a kid in high school. I had a summer job for a well-known photographer and she let me use her M4 and 50mm Summilux for a whole year. I think I stayed with Leica (when I could buy my own camera and lens) because of my familiarity with them.

And I stuck with it even after SLRs (e.g., Nikon F) were more popular. But mainly because of the optics. Although I did eventually also pick up a Nikon and have since used that brand for a single lens reflex system. But it's really the lenses from Leitz/Leica that keep me with the M system.

Sadly, Leica's quality control has really dropped these days. And their current prices are pretty ridiculous. I had the M9 for a short period but it was full of problems (and finally a cracked sensor.) And I bought a new Leica lens last year that had to be returned. Today, I just stick with the older film M Leicas and lenses. For electronic photography I'm sticking with Japanese cameras and sensors (plus my film Nikon F3 and the lenses that I can use on digital Nikons.) And anyway most all modern lenses are quite good now, with a lot of choices. I doubt I would have gotten into Leica today if I were new to the brand.

I shot leica because I thought they were the epitome of mechanical film cameras.

I stopped shooting Leica because point and shoot cameras and press cameras (polar opposites, I know) suit me better... and because of the negative attention they've brought me.

I don't shoot Leica because I have a HexarAF that is a quiet elegant dream, a Nikon FM3a that is a solid mechanical machine (that makes a very funky shutter sound if you are into that), and a Fujifilm X100 that is (weird but) a personal joy to use.

So more or less, I have a camera / lens setup for every mood I'm in.

I like them for the optics. I think Leica lenses have their own kind of look. I have other lenses that I shoot on my M3, but the Leica ones seem magical to me.

Because an M6 with a 50 DR is awesome and small as well as uncluttered and reliable.

KISS = Keep it simple stupid.

There is nothing more simple than a all manual camera...

Why, two reasons ( mainly..) First: It is the camera I have, second: It is the camera that I can focus correctly and guess the exposure correctly. The others are 1) just bulky (Hasselblads) 2) focus wrong ( The digital AF cameras) 3) Deliver images I don`t like 4) With those , I just feel like a normal photographer... With Leica M I feel and look like a stupid amateur but get images I like, the images I was after since 1964...

For historical reasons and considered shots with a Barnack.

Bursty photos ordered are handled with my iPad (you know, "Take a picture of that and send it to my sister.")

I shoot Leica because ...

its simple .. my self learned skill is not fancy ..
using many cool and complicated features camera confuse me

I havent learn or step into the artifical lighting, strobe, macro, etc
I think I simply too lazy or ignorant to learn stuff

Leica suits me well with my simple need.. documenting life arround

Sincerely

Well I've had an M6 for years now, but was not shooting it all the time.

Now I'm shooting Leica every day. Why? The M9 prices came down and I can't do any better in daylight with anything.

It's a beautiful pain.

Because it is the only camera available that reproduced tones for monochrome that I liked in the 1980`s.

Tried them all, no cigar. German lens were more to my liking than Japanese, but the gap has narrowed.

With digital, it comes down to RF or DSLR choice.

Because there is no cheap "plasticky" feel like all modern DSLR. The quality of the M3 and 50mm Summicron DR are unequaled by any new camera.

I love the feel of the Leica M body type, be it the M9 or M7.

The lenses are tiny compared with their SLR counterparts.

No other company makes a full frame digital rangefinder, or camera that handles M-mount lenses as well as Leica.

The image quality of the M9, particularly at base ISO or near, has a look that I cannot match in any other camera, including the Canon 5D Mark II, and certainly no aps-c or smaller sensor camera.

I enjoy the romantic Leica mystique, and allow myself that irrational indulgence of thought.

I've sunk a lot of money into the M system over the years, and I have all the bodies and lenses I've bought. Such investment demands usage!

This is not to say that the M system is perfect. If Leica produced a M that was the same thickness as the M7 or M6TTL, dropped at least a third, preferably half the weight, and made the shutter even more quiet than the M 240, I'd be over the moon.
