The Jazz Loft - Eugene Smith

I watched this wonderful movie last night about Eugene Smith and his loft in New York in the 50s and 60s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhS2SrWW6VI

I highly recommend it for anyone with the slightest interest in jazz, black and white photography or creativity in any form.

Just magic

As a fan of both Jazz and black and white photography, that looks so good. I'll have to check it out.

I know the Eugene Smith jazz work, strong impact. In our photo association we had a few years ago a night with a slide show of his photographs and a jazz group playing live.

It was a night full of emotion.

I really like that documentary, and bought it off of iTunes a number of years ago. It's probably still available. He was a fascinating man, living in a fascinating time, doing some fascinating work.

Best,
-Tim

Peter and Rober-

You might want to try using a VPN to pretend you are steaming from the US. I can confirm the link work s for US residents but might be geo-restricted elsewhere.

Thanks, I know we are "geo restricted", not the first time...

I will look for this video. I've had the book for some time and as a jazz and photography fan of that era, ah, a terrific chronicle. In the book is the pawn shop's list of what he turned in for cash....oh my, what a list of gear.

Great film, I saw it at the Cleveland International Film Festival in either 2016 or 2017, I forget which year.

I haven't seen the flick, but a few years ago there was a series of podcasts about the Jazz loft tapes that Smith had. It covered quite a bit of ground over several hours. I can't remember who put it out, maybe PBS? Might be worth your time to search for it if you like Smith and find that Jazz Loft stuff interesting. I listened to it all in the darkroom while I was working. It was really good.

I just looked it up in my Itunes. It was put out by New York Public Radio back in 2009. It is about two hours or a little over.

Podcasts app has whole series about the topic. Search: The Jazz Loft Radio Series.

YouTube link is dead here as well.

When I go to the youtube link, it shows the video is available for rent or purchase.

I bought the video sometime ago from Amazon. It was available for sale for those with Prime accounts and who use streaming. I don't recall the price. The DVD is also for sale there.

I enjoyed "The Jazz Loft" mainly because of the music history--I'm a fan of jazz, especially from that period.
