"Sharpness is" has always been my favorite thread at RFF. Whether by design or accident, beauty in distortion is the abstract art of photography. I love it.

Gosh, there are some good images in this thread. Much more intriguing than many "sharp" images.

I always believe that if you have to think about an image to interpret it, it makes you more invested in the image and have a connection to it.

An image like this reminds me of poetry compared with prose. Poetry does the same. It forces you to think about what the artist is saying and make your own interpretation of those words by relating them back to some experience or emotion you have had. Their words become more meaningful to you in this way.

Exactly the same with these kind of images. And I think this is why I like ambiguous images. Including blurry images when done well.

That's extremely well put Peter. Your analogy with poetry really cements what I had in mind, but I couldn't quite express it so concisely and eloquently.

Shot on a Jupiter-8 wide open on Fomapan 400. It's not a great picture technically but it's a great picture of my friend. That look is 100% him.

There are lots of ways of playing the unsharp image game.

Many of them I work hard for but some are as a result of a screw up with my technique (such as the first below)

Waiting - An Exercise in Shadow, Blur and Grain by Life in Shadows, on Flickr

Or by double exposure in Camera

The Practice of Iaido 2 by Life in Shadows, on Flickr

Or post processing

Hong Kong Street 2010 (2) by Life in Shadows, on Flickr

Or by deliberately shooting through a medium that will lessen sharpness such as wet glass

Waterwall at the National Gallery 2011 by Life in Shadows, on Flickr

By the waterwall by Life in Shadows, on Flickr

Or a bit more double exposure

Guys, Bus and Blur by Life in Shadows, on Flickr

Or reflected in a window

Reflections by Life in Shadows, on Flickr

I like this game.

My goodness the colors pumped out of those sigmas is special (helped of course by your talent Mike). But I think I would stumble over the low effective ISOs of the sensors. Never the less I could still be tempted to own one the look is so good.

Peter, I don’t think an accomplished photographer like yourself would have any problems at all dealing with low ISO. I think there’s an Sd Quattro H sitting on a shelf somewhere just waiting for you to buy it. Of course that also means there’s a Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG "Art" lens (46mm on Sd Quattro H) waiting for you too. Go for it!

All the best,
Mike
