Sad News--Roger Hicks
I reached out to Roger Hicks because he had kind of disappeared over the last few months, and I'm sad to say that he told me that he has advanced cancer and a few weeks to perhaps only a few days to live. This was sad news for me as I have learned a great deal from the writings of Roger and his wife, Frances, over the decades in the form of the their books, articles, and web presence, and we have been communicating by email occasionally for awhile. Besides being a loss to Frances and his friends and family, this will be the loss of a lifelong advocate for film photography.

I've enjoyed his writings both here and on his and Francis' website. I, for one, will miss his presence enormously.

That is such terrible news. I had a private conversation with him in November answering my photographic questions. I always thought of him as a pillar in this community. His contributions will be terribly missed. This makes me feel really sad.

Sad news, indeed. However, it is comforting to know that Roger seems to have lived a very good life, doing what he loved with his wife, Frances.

In case you're reading this, Roger...
Thank you VERY much for your personal, sincere and honest approach to photography, and mentoring on photography. Though I wasn't able to read all your books, I enjoyed the ones I managed to find, and I was very truly happy that you came to post so often here at RFF. Be sure that you have always been appreciated, truly respected and admired for your lifelong work and your generosity to others. Again, thank you very much, Roger. |

Thanks for posting. I always enjoyed Roger's suffer no fools approach and learned a lot from his books, website, and his occasionally cantankerous replies right here. A life well lived! Cheers to that!

I very much enjoyed his book "A History of the 35mm Still Camera". This was the beginning of my interest in the technical development of cameras.
Thank you so much, Roger. Erik. |

Yesterday I received my second issue of the new film photography magazine, PhotoKlassik International, and was very pleased to see that Roger had written an article for it. It is a beautifully and thoughtfully produced magazine. So I reached out to him about that and about other health challenges Roger and Frances had been having and he let me know this sad news, thanked me for my support and friendship, and signed off "Cheers". I learned so much from them, and he has been incredibly generous in his advice since I started developing film again last year. A very sad day indeed.

Such sad news. Roger has certainly been an inspiration, with his freely given knowledge, and very solid opinions. I hope his remaining days are peaceful, and that he knows he will be terribly missed by many. And, my best wishes for Frances.

Sad news, indeed.
I started reading Roger and Frances in Shutterbug magazine. I was thrilled to find Roger here and to become of aware of his and Frances's website. They have shared a lot of hard-earned knowledge with others interested in photography. I wish Roger a smooth transition and I send my condolences to Frances. I will miss you, Roger. - Murray

He will be remembered by many people by virtue of his art and expertise. I have many of his and Frances’ articles that I clipped from Shutterbug magazine so many years ago, and refer to still. Roger, thank you for all that you gave to so many of us.

What awful news. I'd been concerned for a few weeks and had written Roger. Feared Frances's health had declined but now this. I hope he's not suffering excessively.

A relative newcomer to photography, I discovered Roger and his and Frances' work through this forum. In my opinion, he is one of the jewels of this forum. I wish him peaceful days ahead.
