Has anyone ever gotten the urge to purge?

I've found myself in this bizarre situation where I stepped back and looked at all the gear I have acquired over the past few years and I suddenly got the urge to rid myself of a lot of it. I have way too much stuff and I feel almost guilty because I've sorta rotated my few favorites and settled on them while the others sit unused. I'm sure others have felt this as well. For those who have purged much of their collection, do you feel a sense of relief that you are freeing up some $ and more importantly aren't spending time deciding which of your 7 50's to mount on your M? Or do you regret selling them? I have a feeling I'm gonna be listing a bunch of stuff soon...

Done that a couple of times.. And initially it seems to help against that nagging feeling that I have more gear than talent. But somehow, after a while, stuff starts to accumulate again, and I'm back where I started.

I have and I am.
I'm currently purging a load of living history uniforms and kit, and I'm thinking about selling off a load of cameras that fall outside of my particular collecting niche.

Yes and I'm very close to doing it. I'll probably keep my D4 and my Sigma Merrill compacts for digital and my OM system for film ... and maybe a medium format camera.

Sure. Kind of constantly.
I'm really torn there. On the one hand I would like to sell most of my stuff and only keep the things I really love, on the other hand I want to be prepared for different scenarios. I cannot shoot all the subjects and projects with just my favourite camera and two or three lenses. So I keep my stuff. And some just for the sake of having them.

Yes, but my Oblomov inclinations usually get the better of me - Oblomov is a character in a 19th Century Russian novel who seems incapable of making important decisions or undertaking any significant actions.

Last week when I realised I have nine versions of the Pentax/Takumar 50mm...

But seriously, I get the urge to purge all the time, which is odd because I also get the urge for GAS all the time.

Having lots of gear doesn't suit the way I actually shoot (I'd happily travel the world with an M2 and a couple of primes), but I'm horribly prone to acquiring more.

Such inclinations would come in very handy for, say, deciding whether to marry the manipulative gold digger.

Yep had a few purges ….. sometimes regretted and bought stuff back but on the whole not.

Never gotten rid of M bodies and M lenses but 35mm slrs and compacts have gone.

Digital I have a dslr and an A7r2 ,the A7S went .
Digital compacts: the GR went only to be replaced and I still use my two Merrills .

Yes, to fund urgent needs like education or monthly bills

Some other times I have no idea what to do with the money so I end up buying other gear.

If you decide to purge, it's a good market for sellers nowadays because prices are high.

All the best!

Whenever I eat pineapple.

I’m pretty continually changing things around, with a slow reduction in number of items.

Nowadays the purge is continuous and the purchases far more sporadic.

There will be a purge in my house very soon. My wife insists. .

Actually, I was moving that way myself, but since we are downsizing for a potential move to a small house, it will be sooner than later. It just occurred to me one day a little while back that I seemed much happier when I had much less gear.

Easier to avoid the Oblomov problems when you don't have to obsess on which 50mm f/1.4, or which body, or tripod, or ...

I'm sort of looking forward to it actually.

I purge periodically, but my problem is that I then buy new stuff to replace it.

I have way too much stuff, and am really looking forward to all you guys upcoming purges so I can get more!

My problem is almost every piece I pick up to use from what I have I love using. I don't have favourites!
But there are two items where I don't feel this - my Minolta Prod20s (retro looking film P&S kamera) - because it is a very cheap camera dressed up and always disapoints me in its results; and my beautiful black Kiev 4AM because it gets in the way of shooting. But the lens on it is nice.

Don't talk about it, just hurry and do it before everyone who is talking about it does it and floods the market and prices plummet.

Then buy a M6ttl and an MP at bargain basement prices.

I had a bit of a purge earlier this year. Sold 6 cameras and a couple of lenses. I found it just made room (and funds) for some more cameras and lenses. Oh well.

I sold a few cameras and lenses a few months ago to partially fund a college graduation present for my son. I offered to buy him a better used car, but he said he wanted to keep driving his "beater" and wanted an M6TTL instead. I even got a new 35mm lens in the bargain. So much for purging.

Every time I have thinned out the mass of cameras and lenses I generally regret having done so soon afterward and end up purchasing for a second time the same item - most notably the 12-24 AFS DX Nikkor, the 10.5 mm DX Fisheye and the 21mm F4 Screwmount C/V lens and an M2- sometime in the following years.

This has been on my mind as of late, with my wife ill and being her main caretaker I don't get out to shoot much now.
When I took Social Security a few years back I started buying Cameras and lenses I only dreamed about having. Now Most of this gear sits idle.
I have to start letting some of it go soon.
Some of the funds can go to CLA's of what I intend to keep.

I have dozen of film cameras I don't need. All I need is couple of fillm M and one SLR. I have two thirds of what I use already. At some point, I let the rest go.

I go through multi-year periods of acquisition, trying different stuff just for the unique user experience, not because of need. Then in one season or two I'll do a quick purge, overshooting the purge as much as I do the acquisition. A lot of film stuff has gotten so inexpensive, it's not to-terrible an issue. Anyway, you gain the experience to speak authoritatively on different equipment, from a Contarex to Leicaflex. You get the idea. The process does refine in your own head what you "need", "want" "like" ect.

Recently, over the last 6-8 months I sold all my rangefinders. A mistake to sell "all." Variety helps keep things from getting stale. So, I'll probably start the pro=cess over again. It's sort of a game.

My main cameras and lenses, that I use most of the time, don't get sold. Too many memories attached to that metal and glass. It's all the periphery that gets bought and sold.

I should probably let some duplicate stuff go. Example: I only have one M-mount camera, but I have several M-mount lenses, including some desireable ones, but I can easily replicate all of them using less-expensive LTM lenses with an adapter, and the LTM stuff works equally well on my several LTM camera bodies.

Beat, imo, to start selling off when you need the cash for a repair to another camera (of course).

I went through a period of purging, out of guilt and worry about money. But now I TOTALLY REGRET IT. I sold my beloved M6, and some lenses; now I miss them more than I would've thought. I wasn't desperate for money, so I should've thought it through better.
