Canon R # 1 Mirrorless in Japan Home Market
This surprises me. To be more exact, I'm shocked.
According to this article, the Canon R made Canon the #1 mirrorless sales leader in Japan, beating out Sony, Nikon, Fuji, Olympus - everyone

Apparently, the Japanese customers have made their decision that they need "IBIS" like a hole in the head!

canon is like apple. they can make a crappy product sell out-sell their competitors simply because they can. they have the marketing, brand name recall, network, etc for that to happen
the running joke is they will make a camera with specs from 2012 and sell it in 2019 and everybody will still buy it. the sad part is thats mostly true.
i know that i am **** talking but it is what it is, please don't kill me for my statement.

100% truth.
However, I will state that canons are kind of like apple computers of a decade ago in that they 'just work'. The reason they're so popular with wedding photogs, fashion photos, sport photogs, photojournalists is because they aren't at all finicky and they're consistent and reliable. A canon 5dii's files are going to have the roughly the same look as their entry level DSLR, the 1dx, and the current 5d. Boring yes, but the consistency works well as a tool. Digital nikons, Sony's Olympus's don't have that consistency (to my eyes anyway).
Caveats are the the EOS R having that stupid Touch Bar which is very un-canon like, and that they released it with mainly really expensive and huge lenses - which makes me wonder which every-day consumers are walking around with giant 24-105s, 50 f1.2Ls and the humungous 28-70mm f2... That bit doesn't make sense to me.

I would rather compare apple to current leica... both have boutiques with expensive, often inferior products.
Canon cameras are true work horses, no stylish gimmicks.
Maybe its the better Af japanese buyers make them choose the canon over nikon?
Maybe japanese customers have more native ef glass than sony e mount lenses?
Imo both, Nikon and Canon are inferior to the sony a7 but hey, it's just Sony... no photo brand (actually its minolta too).

Even in Europe the regional photo market differences between the countries are often quite huge.
Therefore we should be very cautious to make conclusions from the situation in Japan to the situations in other markets.
For example the number of female photographers (higher percentage of the total number) is higher in Japan compared to North America or Europe. And most women prefer smaller and lighter cameras. Which is one of the reasons why DSLMs are more popular in Japan compared to most other markets.

Yes, in the same way, the R is a really fine camera, a bit expensive but still a good value, although I see it more like a mirrorless version of the 6D. Doesn't surprise me it's popular, especially since the R lenses look to be very good. If I weren't already into Fuji X, it'd probably be my choice to go mirrorless.
It is no small thing to be able to use Canon Service when you need it. Best in class imho.

If I had an R, I'd take my 15 year old EF 85/1.8, stick it on the adapter, and shoot it all day long. There are reasonable alternatives to the new R lenses ...

I really like Canon solution to reduce dust on sensor on R. Wish other makers follow the example.

That’s what an installed user base will get you. People will cut you a lot of slack for a modicum of consistency.

Yes indeed, if not elsewhere. Canon bodies are kinda like the Toyota or Honda sedans or, for that matter, the F-150 of vehicle transportation. They work and run and are serviceable - value for money. No one will ooh and ahh at your Canon, you won't have tactile orgasms using one, it won't look vintage or cool. It'll just do its job for you and get out of the way.
I still have a 1V. What a workhorse. Used it up to 14 years ago shooting sports with film. There's not much it can't do. The kind of camera thinking that informs Canon design.

Wasn't the Canon M50 the best selling mirrorless in Japan the last couple of years? The EOS R replacing it wouldn't be a surprise.

I really like the programmable control ring added to the new lenses and available on one of the EF adapters.

Looks like it would still apply if we replaced all "Canon" with "Nikon"...

My impression as well. After quick googling looks like M50 was best selling mirrorless in Japan 2018.

Sure, only reason not mentioned is that I don't have personal experience with Nikon. And, we're talking about the R rather than the Z.

I think the main reson is L glass and color science !
They are reliable and a safe investment, their customer service is solid.

I`m finding that to be true all be it a bit late in the day having cycled through most makes including Leica.
Currently have a 5D3 and A7R2 having sold an A7S.
Heading across the pond in a week …. guess what I`ll be taking.
The 5D3.
PS I would imagine Nikon to be the same.

I don't imagine you're alone, Michael.
I guess the longer I shoot, the more values like serviceability and reliability matter and values like style points seem to recede.

Good, at least Canon will remain in the camera/lens market.
