SD card / computer incompatible?

I have a laptop, MacBook Pro, and an iMac about the same age (both are 2015) running Mojave. The iMac has once again not been able to read an SD card from the M10 while the laptop reads it fine. The iMac can mount the card, but nothing is 'readable' by Finder or Bridge or Photoshop and I only get generic DNG icons.

Card works perfectly fine on the laptop. Same card worked perfectly fine yesterday in the iMac. I formatted it in camera this morning (as I always do after a transfer/back-up).

This points to the iMac being the p.o.s. in this equation? I'm thinking most of my computer woes are coming from the iMac in general.

Just moved a DNG to my iCloud Drive directly from the card on the laptop and it opened fine on the iMac, as did a PSD I made from another file from the card via the laptop.

Sandisk Extreme Pro 64 GB card, one of the preferred ones.

It is my fondest wish for 2020 that all camera manufactures would abandon the SD card and adopt a modern standard, in particular CF Express. Leica users have suffered from the first day of the M8 with inconsistent results from SD cards, but Leica soldiers on with them oblivious to the SD card deficiencies.

My 2014 iMac sometimes has trouble reading a card inserted in the card slot on the back, but always reads the same card fine using a cord with a card reader. Might try that...

This is what I'd do. And I don't use SanDisk in Leicas.

I’d switched to a card reader ages ago because the rear slot seemed problematic. Now neither works reliably. Also switched to this card after I had several Lexar cards not work reliably.

Looks like the new year will finally bring a new machine.

Try another card reader. It might have its own mechanical issues. Or the port you are plugging the reader into- try another one. Or rethink the whole data path and go around the iMac ports?

If this is the only reason you want another computer, I'd do a work around.

Real PITA when stuff like this happens.

I tried DNG.

Sticking with RAW. Canon equipment.

Problem maybe is Leica using DNG. Developed by Adobe.

I use a card reader not from camera to computer.

Possible work around, transfer files (folder) from your laptop to your iMac.

Card works fine this morning in the iMac via card reader.

This machine has had numerous weird issues since the first OS update. It has been wiped and re-installed more than once, and I've had to re-install CC twice in the last year.

I never had a similar problem until a few hours ago !
Mac Pro (Late 2013) running Mojave (10.14.6) and LR CC.
SandDisk ERxtreme PRO 32 GB card, already used many times and with only 71 DNG files from my M10 on it,alwauzs formatted in camera before using it.

"the inserted disk is not readable by this computer" is the message which appears.

I tried another card (same type) with DNG first and JPG later but same result.
I inserted the card into the slot of my very old Mac Book Pro (Mavericks 10.9.5) and card is ok, can be read and the files DNG and JPG are visible and can be open by PS.

I'll transfer to a USB stick and import into the Mac Pro in LRCC and it works.
Not a great problem because all photos can be reshot but it's worrying. I suspect (hope) the card reader has some problems...will try a new one in the next days when shops will open.

Sounds like a slightly flakey card reader in the iMac. Nothing wrong with SD card, DNG file format (it is raw, you know) or anything like that.

I have not had any problems with any SD cards from Transcend, Sandisk, or Lexar in any of my cameras or quality card readers (sandisk and lexar). I have had a couple of flakey card readers and one in one of the Macs I've owned. I had the one in the Mac replaced, the card readers I tossed in the garbage as they were cheap junk.

There's nothing wrong with the SD card design or format. I've had plenty more screw ups with CF and other memory card formats.

Card reader failures happen. Fix and move on.

Also worth mentioning... Format your card (periodically or always) with the "SD Formatter" application. Some cameras may not do a great job at formatting.

Just looked at the card slot on my laptop (PC, not Mac), and that's a pretty large place for stuff to get in and hamper the connections. You might want to blow it out periodically just in case. I always use a card reader in one of the USB ports.

Bad drive? Or drive cable not seated properly? These can lead to flaky i/o issues and file corruption.

Out of curiosity I tried with the card reader into the USB port of the same Mac Book Pro and the same SD card and it cannot be read.

I really need a new card reader for my MacPro (2013) .
Unfortunately there are not SD card reader for the Thunderbolt 1 port! I'll stick to the USb port!
