Guys, here I want to share a funny detail of the Replica lens.

The maker finally decides to use Red Corundum as the material of the iconic Red Dot on the 8-element Replica lens.

Here are some photos to show you guys how it looks like. He even let his colleague to Compare the toughness among Red Corundum(which will be used on the Replica lens), Zircon, and Moissanite.

You can watch a video clip here.

EPIC addition of the red dot! So classy and distinctive I am very surprised nobody (including myself!!) thought of this modification.
I predict Leica will not stand for this and offer Ruby Red Dots on their new line of Leica Luxe Lenses. Then we will see who is copying who!!
Brilliant!! A hearty thumbs up!!

Hello KEVIN-XU,
I discovered this topic this morning and I am just absolutely blown away by this upcoming lens. I will buy one for sure when it is available. And my anniversary is in October, so it is perfect ;p Please add me on the list of buyers for a black version

Leica 8-element & Replica first version Comparison

I've done a very serious comparison between the original Leica Summicron 35mm f2 Ver.1 (8-element) and the first version prototype Replica.

All the photos were taken by Leica M10. DNG files auto adjust by the photoshop and convert into JPEG.

It appears that even though the replica has coated glass elements, the flare is more pronounced than in the original lens.

Leica Summicron 35mm f2 Eight Element Replica Prototype made in China by Kevin-Xu, on Flickr

FYI, the original Leica 8-element that been used in this test is the final year model in excellent condition and CLA'ed by DAG camera. I suppose its coating is the best among its 6 years production line.

Yes, Raid is right, the flare is more pronounced with the replica.

In the other tests the replica is not bad at all in my eyes.

Was a lens hood used with each lens? If such flare occurred with a lens hood being used, then this is maybe problematic for photographers shooting in scenes with strong light sources. Isn't the replica using multi-coated elements?

You are right, raid. That's also what I found after this side by side test. The coating that been applied to the first version replica is based on the earlier 8-element model. I suppose this is one of the reason made the difference in anti-flare performance. It is the first version of the prototype. The maker told me they improved the performance on the second version. We will see.

Good question. In order to make it a fair test, I put the original lens hoods on both of the lenses.

Well, you may have identified one light situation in which something in the replica lens differs from the original lens in such a way that flare effects are more pronounced. I wonder if the replica lens can be studied again by its maker to figure out why this is seen.

Erik.
Hi Erik, when I testing the lens it was close to sunset. The sunlight is very strong and in a low position. So it is very challenging for the lenses. More like an extreme test.

Could it be that the cementing of the glass elements has something to do with the flare here? Was it blackened out?

The test result has been sent to the maker. And I also provide some notes that been written down during the test. He fully realized this situation, and he said it had been improved in the later version.

The maker told me they improved blackout technique on the edges of the lens elements. Anti-flare performance has been improved.

It is not easy to craft such a lens, Kevin. I am glad to see the makers not avoid such obstacles.

Thank you, Shawn. It is a good question. All the photos I've taken were using the rangefinder to focus, no live view involve. So I am confident to say that at least mine replica lens can focus 100% accurately. I never noticed any focus issue with this replica.

Indeed. It's been two years since the maker started this project. There must be lots of challenges they need to overcome. Aside from the anti-flare performance, to be honest, I can barely tell the difference between the original and replica. Their rendering, sharpness, and bokeh look almost identical.

After we discussed the anti-flare performance on the Replica lens, the maker let his colleagues send him the following two pictures to show the result after they improved it.

It seems - because the difference in dept of field - that these two shots are made with different f-stops. I think a comparison like this is only useful when both shots are made with the same f-stop.

Hi Kevin,

This is perfect timing -- I was just seeking a v1 Summicron & was considering a Summaron due to the relative 'affordability'...

Please let me know once this lens becomes available for order; I'd love one in black.

Not to distract the audience here, but the Summaron is a gem. Buy it if you can.

I NEED one! In black or brushed chrome, or whatever the original v1 is.
Edit: I'd also like a second copy in chrome or brass

Kevin, I have been following this thread and project since your first post about it. From what I have seen, the lens maker is doing a superb job creating the replica.
I am very interested to know when the lens will become available, and would love to get a copy.
Thank you for all your work with comparison photos.

Take it as you will, but I’m really not a fan of the pink-purple mounting button. It looks like someone misplaced the sequins from a prom dress...

Personally I’d much prefer plain red. Simple, classy and timeless. A lens like this doesn’t need ‘bling’.
