It's a Leica camera that you can buy it new and then put a film in it.

Doesn't putting a film in a new Leica ruin it?

This camera is still in production, every Leica store has them, so what's so special that B&H has some? If I were to buy a new Leica, I'd definitely buy it from a Leica store and not B&H. Same prices.

Not if I wear cotton gloves to avoid finger prints and a monocle while whispering "Alle Achtung, groŖartig!"

Yes, I can see that happening if you load the film from the front, through the lens mount.

Does the film go in front or behind the sensor?

I was puzzled with same question.

In my FSU imagination, I draw lineups to B&H store. Overnight, for three days. Waiting to grab limited amounts on MP. Some a selling their place in line, for 500$.

The Red Cross will come and distribute blankets at night and in the morning the cops will tap you with a club and say "wake up and get up!"

I buy my bulk film and chemistry from B&H. I watch the placeholder for MP's there, and this is the first there has been "in stock, ships today". I occasionally check the Leica stores and they are out of stock every time I check. I'm not buying, just checking. If I buy one it will be a used one.

I might bite. Do Leica service the cameras? It would pay off in the long run not to have to gamble anymore on 50+ year old cameras and dubious "CLA's".

They sure do, but depending on what country you live in, service can range from good to bad (based on what you read here on RFF). Many folks opt for an independent technician for service, once the camera is off warranty.

Absolutely... glad you have aspirations!!

A black paint a la carte MP is my ultimate dream. Second to that is a red Jaguar E-type (or was it in first place?) But I learned long ago, some dreams are best left alone as dreams.

I have enough trouble as it is.

Even if a Leica store doesn't have it, they can get you a brand new one from the factory within a week or so. I think if you buy from and establish a relationship with your local Leica store, you'd benefit from that quite a lot. For example, every time I go they ask me if I need a loaner camera and/or loaner lenses, for as long as I want and for free. Plus, I always get a glass of champagne for free and get invited to their receptions and events to meet other photographers.

Aside from the other valid answers here, I think Leica tried to go back to their old "all metal parts" construction ethos so that the MP would be as durable as the legend maker III series and M2, M3 & M4 cameras. The rangefinder is also supposed to be less flare-prone than what the M6 had. They all seem pretty durable to me. They should be, for what they cost.

They do. In warranty, service is usually free. Out of warranty Leica charge an eye-watering 149Ä/hour + VAT plus parts. Service times are currently estimated at about 6 to 8 weeks.

My M7 is in Wetzlar at the moment, where it will have the shutter curtains replaced along with the DX reader and the anti-flare update. The optical DX reader is (still) free, but even so the total cost is not so very far off what it would cost to buy another 2nd hand M7.

That said, this is a 2002/3 camera and this is its first repair, so the service costs averaged over its lifetime are not quite so bad.

I owned a black paint MP at one time. It was very nice, but the photos it made weren't much different from what I get out of my M2. And with the M2, I don't have to fret every little scratch and ding, nor do I need to think about how much money I'd be out if it got stolen.

I prefer the M-A to the M-P, not because it has zero electronics, but because the VF is cleaner as there is no break in the bottom horizontal frame line. It is broken in the M-P due to the meter leds.

The first time I saw a black paint MP ready to buy in a shop was in 2008 or 2009. It gleamed like a giant black pearl behind the glass of the cabinet. I was afraid of brassing the paint just by the pressure of my gaze. As much as I'd like one, that whole brassing concept just doesn't work for me. I prefer a camera that will cosmetically hold up to use, like black or silver chrome.

I paid something like $2500 for an M7 when it came out and it is the best camera I own. This camera has been around the world with me. If something breaks like all things will eventually I don’t mind springing whatever $1500 to get it fixed. Dealing with a boutique company I would need to send the camera to Germany and then wait whatever months. I don’t buy enough from local camera store to get special treatment and alcohol nor am I a pro who can just drop gear off at the local distributor to get whatever priority treatment. I am wondering if Leica expects their user base to care about service at all or are the users just extremely forgiving. I am tempted to get reacquainted with the pre-metered Leica because my local independent repair guys have the parts.

I would very much enjoy owning a silver M-A, but the premium over an M2 makes it a highly illogical choice. Still, it would be nice to own a brand new Leica film body.
