Thanks Lynn -was just happy I got something because walking toward that bench, I had the camera on A and inadvertently moved the exposure dial on my X Pro a couple stops south! I enjoyed several of yours here on the previous page. Great subjects, they make!

Here's one of my guy who missed me while I was away last week.

The most difficult photos I've ever taken. Ten minutes after she was put to sleep. Still not sure I should have taken them, but I gambled on it being a lot easier to destroy the negatives than later wishing I had them.

This afternoon I felt a bit weird and upset that I shared the photo, so decided to delete it. Probably should have kept it private. It's hard to understand how to deal with her images at the moment. A lot of advice seems to be to print and view them as part of the grieving process, but it's still really hard. My mind's a mess. Sorry.

Your decision and your grief take precedence. But you made a beautiful portrait of a precious being, and it was a gift I am sorry no longer to see I speak as one who has posted here on RFF a double portrait of my mother 5 minutes dead with my brother the Zen monk saying the Buddhist prayers for the departed over her.

Take care.

Everyone grieves in their own way, don't let people tell you how to you "must" do so. Follow your feelings.

I have had four dogs put to sleep in the last decade and for the last three of those I documented the procedure, but have not yet had the fortitude to look at the negs. When the time is right, I know where they are. For now, it's still too raw to see any of the dogs in death -- I still can only handle seeing the happy times. There are no rules for how to mourn.

Thank you both. I really appreciate the replies.

It's comforting to discuss these matters with people who have gone through the same events and can appreciate how tough it is. I've had to deal with a couple of people lately who have insinuated, "it's just a dog", which makes things even harder to deal with.

Dogs are perhaps the only creatures capable of unconditional love, something which comes more naturally to them than it does to most humans. No one who has ever been on the receiving end of that love has ever thought “ it’s just a dog”.
Sorry for your loss, it’s rough. At some point in the future a new puppy can help. It won’t replace, but it can help, even if it might not seem so right now.
Best wishes.

Eugene O'Neill's tribute to his dog: I read it each time I've had to put down one of my dear dogs, and I find it a comfort. Perhaps you will too.
