Kevin, what is mr Zhou's history, has he made lenses before? Some history about the man would be interesting! Cheers.

Hi Kevin, do you have any idea how many lenses the maker is able to manufacture for the first batch? I am trying to work out if there’s a chance I’ll make the cut!

Cheers,
Ben

I have seen Kevin's reply to someone's request to get a lens. It was basically that the first batch is sold out. Any new lens requests will be for the second batch.

Sorry Ben, there are already many people waiting to be put in the first batch. Please wait for the second batch. Or more precisely we should call it the regular batch.

Best,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I was one of the earlyish ones and have filled out the form etc. I am just wondering if it will come about given recent comments about limited numbers etc.

Many thanks,
Ben

Actually looking back you mentioned there would be 200-300 copies going overseas so hopefully I should be OK.

Cheers,

Does having received a Google Order Form signify that one will receive lenses from the first batch?

Hi Ben,

Since you've received the google form and submit your response, then you are in the first batch. And I see your response on my record. No worries.

Best,
Kevin

This is the first time that Mr. Zhou is trying to make lenses. Quite surprised when I heard it the first time. He is a successful businessman. And he does have many connections to the optical and lens industry in China. That's why he can group up a professional team and could find the machines, facilities, and the rare glass to make his project come true.

Apparently, the Chinese started making Leica clones way back in early 70's:

Hong Qi - Red Flag 20 camera

After 50 years, I am sure the quality of these 8E clones would be even better. Can't wait to see how it performs.

Maybe Mr. Zhou can make Red Flag 20 replica in quality on a par with Leica M3/M4, I am sure the current manufacture capacity in China can do it.

OK, now I'm a little confused. On December 8th I filled out a Google form. Is that the form that means that I will be in the first batch, or was there another subsequent Google form?

I know someone in China who use the replica 35 1.4 and 50 1.4 on film camera. The results looks really good. Sadly these lenses were not made for the mass public.

Looking at the Red Flag 20 红旗 20 pictures, I feel that the front ring of the 8E replica should mark 中国制 rather than 'CHINA'.

I look forward to that day when the Chinese can design and produce a great lens on their own, as good if not better than a Summicron. If the Japanese can do it (think ltm W-Nikkor 35/1.8), I have confidence the Chinese can do it too. 加油 !!

Are such lenses more costly than the corresponding Leica lenses?!

Collectors items are different, the value is judged by rarities not optical performance. I guess the Leica 50mm f1.2 is in the same class.

Hah, I just made an account for this. I’m very interested in this but I found this thread too late. I’m assuming the first batch is fully reserved and starting to ship? Is there any word on a second batch? Will silver and brass colors still be available?

Also, is it possible to order this from Taobao or locally in China instead or is it better to go through you?

A replica of the 50/1.2 will not cost $8000. Will it?

Response #1: Similar things were said about Japan 60 years ago. They turned manufacturing prowess into innovation, and the same will happen in China.

Response #2: Attribution, permission and license payments are overrated. I wish more good ideas were "stolen" and shared with a wider audience.

Once the patent has expired..
Its open season..

Leica would have done well years ago..to do special limited edition reissues of their beloved designs..
In conjunction with their pursuit of..sharper...and more contrasty..with more resolution..bigger and heavier..current offerings..
And not the 28mm f5.6..or the SF 90mm..for the big bux..
As in...who really needs those 2..

To all the people who interest in this lens

In the past few weeks, I continuously received emails from people who want to purchase the replica 8-element lens. Thank you very much for your interest and support. But I am sorry that all the lenses in the first batch have been reserved long ago, as I stated a few weeks before. And we are now having the Chinese New Year. People in China stop working and having their holidays. About the second batch of the replica lens, I haven't discussed with the maker yet as he and his team were still working on the first batch production. I will update this information in the future. Please stay tuned.

Kevin

Thank you, aizan. Yes, we will have to wait a little longer. The good news is the maker was starting to work on some of the early overseas orders now. Some people will receive the lens very soon once people in China back to work.

I can't wait for the New Year to be over - nothing to do with this lens, but the two chefs at a superb new Malaysian Chinese restaurant have returned home to Ipoh and it's shut for two weeks!

Happy Lunar New Year to Kevin, Mr. Zhou, and everyone else! I'm planning to head to my local Chinatown this weekend to photograph the sights and performances, and stuff my face with lots of good food. I'll probably use my Ultron 35/2 that I purchased last month, and maybe next year I'll use my brass 8 Element replica!
