biogon has great optics (if you like the zeiss rendering), however, not nearly as compact as this upcoming ultron.

What I am trying to get across, is that if a 35mm f2 is a lot smaller/cheaper than the Zm, it will must likely have short commings in comparison, on one of these will most likily be distortion. The VC f1.4 35mm lens are great fast, light (200g) lens, but suffer from distortion. I am sure the new VC will be a decent lens but don't expect great it to be perfect.

Dunno about elsewhere, but here in Japan the Voigtlander 35mm F2 Ultron is actually more expensive than the ZM Zeiss Biogon 35mm F2. With an aspherical element with two aspherical surfaces and one extra low dispersion element, I don't really see why its performance would be lacking compared with the Biogon either. If the new Ultron has minimal distortion and better coma control than the Biogon, I'll be very happy.

I would be happier if the new Ultron has no distortion at all.

That would be even better, Erik. I doubt there are very many lenses that truly have zero distortion (as in not measurable rather than not noticeable) though, so I'll settle for minimal.

I hope price is not going to be doubled once it reaches broader range of dealers.
I don't see why it should be more expensive than 35 1.7.
They both have adequately ugly (retro) focus tab, ring .

Häh?
My Ultron 1.7/35 VM has no focus tab - unfortunately.
Btw., Are there news regarding the FCS?
Jan. 25th was mentioned some weeks ago ...

I have been checking regularly as I am also very interested in these lenses. I hope there will be some tests soon! So far – nothing new...

The prices must have been adjusted since your quote, the VGT is now less in your links to Map Camera.

VM 1.7 has odd focus ring. RETRO F2 has odd stick.
It is January 23 today, not 25
I think, I'll skip 35/2, I have awesome 35 2.8 and 2.5. Third 35 would be silly
But 21... This one or SA.

Yes, I know as I own the Ultron f1.7 (as mentioned)
But you wrote that BOTH (the Ultron f1.7 AND the new one) have this "adequately ugly (retro) focus tab, ring" and that's wrong!
The new one has a stick and that's fine - Better than only a ring ...

Regarding the date, I know very well what date we have today!
The 25th was mentioned as FCS date for the two new lenses

The first thing I noticed was the return to the focus stick rather than the tab, I will buy one or both for that reason alone, I've never liked tabs.

Looking into 21mm at the moment. This is small and light like the ZM f4.5. But 3/4 stop faster. A lot smaller than ZM f2.8. Wondering how this lens will compare. Not long to wait now.

Yes, the Biogon was 79,000 yen before. Mustn’t have been a good look having a Zeiss lens cheaper than a similar spec Voigtlander lens.

The new 21mm has the same optics as the Sony E-Mount version. Lots of sample pics on the web already!
I receive my Ultron 35mm tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

Doesn't look promising at all. Purple fringing and soft edges.

Hi, could you possibly link some photos that show what you mention? The samples from the e-mount version I’ve seen so far look good to me.

I just googled this lens in Sony mount. Two reviews on first search return page showing soft edges.

Voigtlander 35mm f2 Ultron VM lens (39mm Marumi UV filter installed)
My kitchen - January 24th 2019
I'll be out of town for a few days, when I get back I'll take some shots with this lens and post them up here.

Wow, looks really small on the camera!
Will pair nicely with a Color Skopar 50mm.

We are lucky that we have such options open to us in 2019.
Is the new CV 35/2 optically superior to the past CV 35mm RF lenses? Is it a lens that has been redesigned not to be negatively impacted by a digital sensor?
Same goes for the 21mm lens.

Yes, I had the same idea when I saw it first!
Funny, that you mentioned the great 50mm Skopar, I just bought one in black, after selling my silver copy years ago.
This time it will stay and maybe in my bag together with the cute new Ultron 35 f2 ...

Well, except for that stick that's a very nice looking lens. Perfect size and appears to be perfectly organized for my taste. Too bad about that stick

Most probably the stick can be removed. There is enough space to focus only with the ring ... when your fingers are not too thick.

My classic Ultron 28 f1.9 has this option. Well, stick is included in the box option, with flat screw in place by default.

Should be good at least. It's shares some traits with the 35/2 ASPH, which follows one of the many modern retrofocal design approaches.
Being optimized for digital shouldn't have visible impact on performance. See the Zeiss Loxia series for example. The 50/2 and 35/2 are basically the same as the ZM version.

Most likely the 21mm lens has been optimized for digital cameras since extreme wide angle lenses have problems with hitting the sensors from an angle.

ahh, thanks for getting those pics up so fast Jon. It's a pretty lens.
I'm just not confident that the thin ribbed focusing ring or focusing "peg" will be pleasing to use. Seeing it next to the Summicron reminds me of how great its focus tab is in use. Eager to hear your thoughts on this. And be honest!

Agree, a tab would make it a killer lens. Not a fan of the screw knobs.
