The posted images look better that I expected based of test reviews from years past which basically said the 50/1.4 is a better optic and the only reason to own the 50/1.2 would be an absolute need for the 1/2 stop gain in light gathering. In this day and age with improvement in film speeds, I don't see the benefit except to impress people with the massive front element. If you need a f/1.2, the latest 50/1.2 has a much better reputation. My preference is the 58/1.4 AFS but it's very pricey.

The barrel and focus ring of the lens is bigger than your average SLR lens, but the front filter thread is a rather normal 52mm. If you really want to impress people with a massive front element, better to use the Pentax 6x7 55/3.5, which has a 100mm front filter thread.

Perhaps the 50/1.2 has a better reputation, but it also costs quite a bit more. I found a great deal on my lens, and it's a fine performer.

I'll share some shots taken with an early 1966 version of the 55 1.2 Nikkor S Auto lens modified and RF coupled to Leica M mount by Amedeo Muscelli :

Interesting results, JM, thanks for sharing! I like this one effect on this one.

I suppose that's a cheaper way to get f/1.2 on the M-mount system without sacrificing a kidney for a Noctilux. Does the modified lens intrude into the viewfinder much, and are you limited in terms of minimum focus distance?

Here are two shots, with one that shows the softness of the lens, and another that shows how much it can sharpen up when stopped down a bit.

Hi,
I don't have the lens with me at the moment but had no trouble framing even though it does intrude a bit in the viewfinder . Minimum focussing distance is 1m and the focusing direction remained the Nikon way.

Best wishes, JM.
