I hadn't heard that, but it could very well be true, going by my experience. I got a black MX from eBay that turned out to have a dent in the right side of the top cover near the wind lever, right on the upper corner, an awkward spot for repair. So I found a spare black MX top with a small dent in the pentaprism, and a friend who owns an auto body shop straightened it for me no charge, re-spraying the affected area with matching black paint. So there's two dented tops, could be fairly common!

Dented prisms are super common on Nikon F3, FM and FE2 from what I have seen on ebay. Also many dented Nikon Fs.

Yeah it’s certainly not an issue unique to the MX...

Surely dented pentaprism covers are not unique to the Pentax MX, but you will see an inordinate number so afflicted compared to other popular models.
The top and bottom covers are made of particularly thin metal (brass) and they most definitely do dent more easily than previous Pentax models.

Remember when introduced Asahi Optical Co. was out to create a professional body smaller and lighter than the Olympus OM-1, a goal they achieved.

I think this is more like the Rollei 35 syndrome - the MX is relatively small and light for an SLR and on the end of a wrist strap or neck strap easily mistreated like a Rollei 35.

That reminds me of when I was stationed on the USS John C Stennis and we pulled in to Klang in early 2000, pretty close to a huge line of cranes like in your photo. Good times... Holy cow, I *almost* got in so much trouble there. It was a great port visit.

Not a fair comparison. To even the playing field, the Olympus has to be black.

I’d love a black one but the chrome popped up locally and I couldn’t resist...

For you 28mm shooters the SMC Pentax-M 28/3.5 lens is very good
and more compact that the other Pentax 28mm models.
It makes an excellent combo with the MX.

The 2.8 is smaller. Which is weird cuz normally faster lenses are bigger. Apparently the 3.5 is better, but I have been very happy with my $20 like new 2.8!

I believe it’s the same in the OM system (28/f2.8 smaller than the 28/f3.5).

For Pentax the real gem for slower wides is the SMC-K 28/f3.5, with its fancy pants 8/7 design.

Yes, that's the one everyone is after, so prices remain pretty high.
The M28/3.5 is nearly as good, far smaller and usually much cheaper.

I have an MX with 30/2.8 and 85/1.8 that I should pick up and shoot again. Does anyone know if those aluminium grips are still for sale somewhere? I have one on my Nikon F2 and I love it, the MX could really use one for the 85.

Nice shots there Nick. I really need to do a shootout between my 85/1.8 non AI-K and Pentax K series.

If I knew 30 years ago what I know now, I'd have shot my girlfriend with my Dad's Pentax ME and SMC 50mm f1.4. I'm just imagining the beautiful black and white or colour images I could have taken back then. Mind you, being an image conscious and insecure girl, she probably wouldn't have let me take her portrait. Oh well, can always look back in retrospective imagination.

As I said in another thread, the black MX was a thrift shop find, alerted by an observant co-worker who thought I might be interested.

The chrome MX is the one I seem to be using more, however, with its funky auto-exposure. It's the same size as the MX but with a totally different shutter.

Both are lightweight and fun to shoot!

Great find!

I wonder when it picked up the chrome rewind crank?

Not sure why people post photos taken with an MX..? What could possibly be illustrated about the camera body by that.
The lens, or the film type, maybe...but the body? Nope.

I agree with your basic point i.e. about the camera body playing no particularly influential part in the images. However, I guess the reason for people posting photos taken with an MX is that........ this thread is about the MX.

Posting a photo made by a camera proves it can make a photo. :-)

If we didn't post photos made by our cameras, all we'd have is photos of the cameras. Not that I'd complain...

Besides, I believe each camera, even those of the same model, imparts its own unique characteristics onto the image which only our soul can see or know about.

No, I'm not referring to Holga light leaks!

Oh my gosh, you're right. You best go tell the M3 users, and the Nikkormat users, and the SRT users, and the F6 users, and the M2 users, and the Bessa users.

In the meantime, here's a photo I took with my MX.
