Zeiss Contax Forum for the classic Zeiss Contax I, II, III, IIa, IIIa , G series, and if you want to push it, the nice Contax point and shoots. Some spill over from the Kievs, the Soviet copy of the Contax II/III can also be expected. Plus the ONLY production camera ever made in classic Zeiss Contax Rangefinder mount WITH TTL metering ... the Voigtlander Bessa R2C.

If soaked in lighter fluid the 'dimple' Contax has a shutter that fires on all speeds but does not open. The tension seems very high and I think I can guess what is wrong (spring). At least this is a camera with no slow speeds so it will be simpler inside. On the other hand it is said to be quite rare and I am inclined to leave it on a shelf.

The Contax behind is the one I have been working on. Result? The shutter works but the way in which the advance winds on gives no confidence in that the knob does not end up where it started from. The shutter opens on all but the fastest speeds but I am unsure of the actual exposures. I have only put it back together loosely and may go back to it when I have recovered from the last bout.

The Super Nettel actually appears to be working, stiff to advance but the shutter seems to be doing what it should. It also responds well to lighter fluid. If I were to pull it apart someone suggested I approach the film advance/speed dial/shutter release knob in much the same way as a Contax II.

In the past I have had good results from the Super Nettel (Tessar 3.5) and from the Contax at the back withe either 3.5 Tessar or 2 Sonnar.

Over the years I have picked up quite a few non working Contax I. They used to be very cheap (understandably) but now seem to fetch money. I am left with these because I sold those that I expected to make the most first (V7 etc) as part of one of my annual GRPs (Gear Reduction Programmes). Three examples of this shutter is surely enough.
Great collection !

Just finished rebuilding the camera and re-gluing the leatherette.

Pardon the crappy Win Phone photo...

Need to do some touch-ups of the black lacquer...and have a look at refilling the engravings on the shutter speed dial and the distance scale on the focusing mount.

All except 1/2sec and Zeit. Milo warned me against adding more tension if the rest of the speeds were okay.
I'll run a test film through it somewhere in the new year.

Sorry, I dont have as pretty pics as you all have. But this is a real gem. It is a Contax iia color-dial I recently found at a thrift store for a good price.
When I bought it, it was very dirty. The shutter did not work at all, and the rear door was dented in so much that I could barely get it off.
Well I was able to hammer out the dent, but I sourced a better back anyway.
I gave it a good cleaning, and I was able to get the shutter to fire. Sometimes it still does nothing when pressed. But I can still advance to next frame. I will live with that for now.

It really amazes me just how quiet these cameras are with their metal bladed shutters.

Unfortunately this is a common problem with the "color dial" postwar Contax cameras. Design fault due to a very complicated X-sync system added inside the camera. Hard to fix, unfortunately too.

I wonder about the color dial cameras. I've read that they are rare but I've seen more that a few for sale.

I've recently bought this Color Dial IIa for around a 130 GBP. In near perfect condition.

The IIa and the prewar collapsible Sonnar make for a very compact and perfect kit. I like this combo and I have set one myself.

My budget Contax kit. Got about $100 into the setup as you see it with the Opton Biogon and Canon finder. Took a while to hunt these deals but is fun to shoot, quite different from my other RFs.

The color shot is same IIIa with an Opton Sonnar 50/2 and a Speed-O-Copy mounted.

Nice.

The Contax camera deals are still out there. I guess they don't draw as much excitement from collectors/users as the Leicas do.

Got some film in the IIa now.

And this is why we should be thankful Zeiss Ikon for such complicate shutter mechanism.

There has been an updraft in Contax I cameras lately, here and on the Facebook Vintage Camera Collectors Group.

Same IIIA as shown above but with the Opton Biogon. Any idea what the pencil'ed number is on the film plane? Doesn't match the body panel serial #s as shown:

@ Anthony, the pencil marks might be some information on the camera service it received. But the sequence reminds me of a serial number.

@ Erik, Nice! Did it need a lot of work to get going?

Thank you, Rick.

Yes, that was a lot of work. I've installed Arsenal ribbons (the best for these cameras with brass shutter curtains I think) and the curtains were out of synch. Now the shutter works, however the speed knob must be used in a slightly different way. Who cares, all the speeds are there.

I think it was a professionally used camera. This wear can only be the result of thousands of films going through it.

Contax I, Nikkor 50mm f/2, 400-2TMY.

Erik.

I also looking for earlier version.

I thinking about 135mm Sonnar lens for Contax I (and III), Do anyone have experiences using 135mm lens with Contax I? I have Leica's universal finder for 135mm it should work for Contax I. I know is is not easy to using 135mm on RF camera.
Or better to start with 85mm Jupiter-9?

When you have a 50mm, it is better to have a 35mm with it. Very useful. The Jupiter copy of the Biogon 35mm f/2.8 is a nice lens.

Very good also is the Nikkor 35mm f/2.5, but it is much more expensive.

Good luck!

Last week I got my first Contax :-)
It is a II, probably from 1938.

The shutter is broken and the view finder is dim, but it has a documented history. The numbers on top and inside match. Also the number of the uncoated Sonnar 1:1,5 dates to 1938.

Now I need a trusty person who can repair it. Preferrable in Germany or Austria.
Any hints are welcome.

Hannes

Attached some leather to the Contax I today

Aki-Asahi strap and the old ever-ready case was falling apart anyway so I turned it into a half-case.

Rick, you've done a wonderful job with this camera.
Also, you have a serious Contax collection growing there, can't wait to see what you add next.

Good idea, and look nice. I also have old original case. It still function, but leather is very old and weak in some places.

This one was missing a side from the top cover and the cover hinge was nearly worn through. The straps on the case weren't trustworthy either.

Thanks Mike, I've got my eye on a Contax II Outfit case at the moment.

The Contax I strap ears would rather accept a strap with strap ends designed for the DSLRs with flat strap clutches, than straps fitted with regular rings designed for classic cameras with small round strap eyelets.

I agree it's a bit of a weird configuration.

I have a khaki canvas strap with leather tabs that I could cut to the right width to fit the Contax I 'ears' ....or maybe get one of Luigi's 7/8mm straps
