Who is your trusted (youtube) camera reviewer

Just wondering what Youtube channels RFF members follow?

My two favorites are:

1. Theoria Apophasis (very technical and direct)

https://www.youtube.com/user/kathodosdotcom/videos

2. Three Blind Men and An Elephant Productions (Entertaining)

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZb...VfVbiEw/videos

I just subscribed to Theoria Apophasis' Youtube channel last week, happened to stumble across it. I think I agree with a lot of his conclusions about lenses, and he seems to be entertaining. He's not my guru or anything, just seems like a funny, smart guy.

About the only channel I really pay attention to on Youtube is

https://www.youtube.com/user/mustie1

He rebuilds old cars, motorcycles, other things with motors. He's a hoot.

Same here. Review videos take too much time. I'd rather read an article and skip those parts that I don't care about.

That said, the few times I've seen videos with Kai, he was entertaining.

Not Youtube but really only reviewers for me are fist and foremost Roger Cicala of Lens Rental, followed by the crew on PhiilipReeve.
Roger doesn't believe in a sample size of n=1

I agree that Theoria Apophasis (AKA The Angry Photographer) has some useful points of view especially on lenses but his manic giggling and constant unnecessary swearing do put me off watching him as much as I would perhaps like to as I end up getting annoyed with him.

I am not prudish in the least and have been known to utilize profanity pretty liberally at times but swearing all the time for the sake of it or just for emphasis quickly becomes tiresome. (Kai (Kaiman Wong) makes better use of off-color jokes though some are a bit juvenile.)

This guy Matt Granger (he used to be known as That Nikon Guy and still has videos on Youtube under that name as well) is good though not as prolific a poster as some
https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...y=matt+granger

And Steve Huff is entertaining and reasonably informative within his limited field of cameras and lens types though not in the least bit technical (if you want that you need to go elsewhere)
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzI...GMf24i1C-skgEw

All up I find this guy (Chris Nichols ) over at DP Review pretty informative, serious and credible.

Um. The "Angry Photographer" kind of rubs me the wrong way. Just a matter of style and my aesthetic. I know people like him but I just don't click with him. Lots of reasons why... But, the world is still a fairly big place and I am not the only inhabitant.

Kai (originally of Digital Rev) is much more to my liking. His humor is more appreciated, and he has held a lot of gear in his hands. Not pretentious, and clearly not "in the pocket" of any manufacturer. And....he likes Leica. Too many out there are either mindless Leica fanboys, or bitter Leica haters. Kai is neither, and he genuinely understands where in this universe the Leica fits....and he likes his. A bit like me? So, when he fills me in on other gear, I tend value his opinion... Lately, he's been a little more into his video stuff than I care about. Still interesting...

Nobody on Youtube makes especially helpful videos for my camera shopping. When it comes to basic features like the viewfinder, the AF, the controls, and the feel of the camera, there are always lots of differences between what they say and what I think when I finally check out the camera. The practical information I get is a list of things to pay attention to when I go to the store.

But I like watching Chris and Jared at DP Review, Kai and Lok, Bigheadtaco, the Northrups, and The Luminous Landscape.

Same, I've tried watching Theoria Apophasis a couple of time but don't find him entertaining or interesting to listen to.
(There are several youtubers that I follow and most I just listen while doing other tasks).
Don't really follow as many YT channels regarding photography, but those I still check from time to time are
-The Art of Photography
-Kai W
-Lok Cheung
-EduardoPavezGoye
-Paul C Smith Photographer
-Chris Nichols DPREV
-Matt Day

Ken Wheeler?! Really?

The Angry Photog has serious issues, I know them firsthand, not from hearsay.

He was banned at my forum for causing all sorts of mayhem. He re-registered, claiming to be a 68 year old woman....

The Angry Photographer, is just an irritating, horrible looking, fat slob.

I do like Three Blind Men And An Elephant, though.

The angry photographer makes me very angry, I cannot think of anything polite to say about him except that watching a part of one of his videos was what put me off YouTube forever.

Yes I sort of agree. But I try to be positive about The Angry Photographer as he apparently has many years of experience in working on lenses and seems to know what he is talking about (I don't think this is just his own claim) and he seems to genuinely want to provide useful information.

But like others here I do find that his odd persona is distinctly off putting as he seems to think it is funny to be deliberately offensive to others. I can take him now and then, when he is being more subdued and balanced but suddenly then he "goes off the deep end" and I have to turn the video off. Shame, as he harms his own brand.

I don't respect ad-hoc opinions of amateurs for information about new cameras.

I have to mention ikanagas (saganaki backwards.) To use his favourite descriptor, he produces really professional camera reviews. They are absolutely hilarious. I haven't seen the X100T review but I am just about to. Have a look at the early Leica ones. The Noctilux review is just a killer.

I take information where I can find it. I've learned a few things from people who don't possess advanced credentials in the field they are speaking about. One has to apply a filter of course, but blanket statements seem to me a bit self-defeating.

Matt Day combines information, humility, empathy plus plain good old communication. He's the only YouTuber I care for. The Angry photographer drives me nuts and I've never lasted more than 30 seconds before switching him off. Your mileage may vary.

I like Ted Forbes his channel is more about photography as a whole but also includes gear reviews.

My view: you have to read between the lines when you are listening to opinions, check several sources focus on facts and make up your own mind. What upsets you may be fine for me, and vice versa. I don't base my decisions much on anyone's reviews (except when i bought an x100t on Ken Rockwell's recommendation, when i knew nothing about digital, which turned out fine meaning Ken Rockwell has plus points in my mind). But i do sift reviews for facts, and to see how the reviewers testing and conclusions relate to my use case. People who talk too much without saying anything annoy me, so i give some of the "popular" channels a wide berth. Anything that smacks of marketing too much i also avoid.

That said, here's some channels i've enjoyed most, some of which include reviews:

Angry photographer
Chuck Jines (though he seldom posts on photography now)
Ted Viera
James Popsys
Jamie Windsor
John the photographer
Matias Burling
Michromatic
Street Shootr
The science of photography
Digitalrevtv before kai left
Camerastore or whatever it was called before that person who's name i forget left - liked his sigma dp merrill vs d850 review

There are probably more, including a guy in a turban living in the US, who sent back a xpro2 in favour of his old xpro1. That made me think, and i like things that make me think.

I think Ted Forbes on The Art of Photography is the only one I check in with from time to time but it is probably because most of his content has nothing to do with gear reviews.

There are others I watch from time to time but nothing regular, just drop in if I see something that piques my interest or because they came up in a search I was doing.

Seriously, if you've ever wondered what those numbers on a ring around your lens are, numbers like 2 and 5.6 and 11 and 16 etc then look at Ikanagas's Noctilux review (Video 2) or his most recent, the X100T review. He's professional, and will set you straight. See my post above.

I've come to really enjoy The Hybrid Shooter, who also has a watch channel. He is thorough and informative, and his voice is pleasant while not having the overblown cheerleading enthusiasm of someone like Peter McKinnon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbg2SiRvZd0

And someone who is funny is Camera Conspiracies. He consistently produces hilarious camera videos without having access to gear.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoZxZizR2JI

For factual reviews and user experiences, I like Chris Nichols, formerly of The Camera Store and now with DPReview.

+1 for Analog Insights
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugZMUD3aGvc

and +1 for Bigheadtaco
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzPcp5CSyMg

And Ikanagas is the best and most knowledgeable reviewer out there. Everyone else should take a leaf out of his book.
