Vintage Nikon F-mount lenses

Almost any of the old F-mount lenses, going all the way back to around 1959-60, are a lot of fun to use. Lots of quality and character, even on modern DSLRs.

Starting with the 85 1.8 Nikkor-H Auto, circa 1972, on the Df.

When I got my first digital camera, a Nikon D300, I decided I'd buy only vintage MF lenses, and haven't been disappointed.

What are you defining as "vintage", any before autofocus?

I agree the rendering is excellent it may be more recent glass has improved coatings to reduce flare and ghosting but sometimes that looses character.
I am fond of my Ai 105 f2.5, this on the new D800 in camera conversion to B/W with a tweaked in camera "profile".

and my 50mm f1.2 Ai, this on HP5+ TD-201 and using the F6

Lynn, love those Ektar shots. The colour of film vs digital is sublime.

Love the vintage" Nikon lenses. Use them on my D610 and D7000. Of course there are prob many technical reasons not to use them but I have never had issues with the IQ. I esp like the 105 and the 50 1,2

By vintage in my mind I was indeed thinking of pre-AF glass. Some super examples here, including Lynn's 50mm film shots! And the 105 in any its incarnations is indeed a must have.

Thumbs up

My 55mm Micro Nikkor is my default glass when shooting 35mm film on something other than my Leica. I just love it. That and the 105. But my pre-teen son has discovered it so it may become more his than mine as he uses a decent FM.

1975 Nikkor 85 mm f1.8 "K":

Optically not perfect, it has a significant barrel distortion and sport the swirly bokeh of the Soviet Helios, but nevertheless has something special.

A pity that it's so big and heavy, mated with a F2 is hard to use on the road.

I love Nikon pre-AI lenses. These are the ones i have:

28/3.5: This is a strange lens with a unique look due to its strong vignetting and the way it produces nice sunstars.

35/3.5 PC-nikkor: This is a rare lens and I like it very much because it's more compact than the 35/2.8 PC-nikkor I also own. Optically is an "enlarged" version of the 28/3.5 pre-AI

50/2.0 "H": Everyone knows this is perhaps the best all-around 50mm lens by Nikon.

50/1.4 "K": Have not used it often enough, because i have the...

5.8cm f1.4 Nikkor-S: The bokeh king, i wish i had twelve copies of this.

135/3.5 Nikkor-Q: A lens with very pleasing bokeh and nice build quality

In the past i've owned also the 200/4.0 Nikkor-Q lens, first version. It was not the sharpest lens but it had extremely nice bokeh, and i sort of miss it.

All in all i'm more a Canon FD/FL lens fan, but those pre-AI Nikkors are lovely.
