Thanks James.
When I first got into shooting film (around 2010) you could still find fairly fresh Ferrania color film. I managed to shoot 6 or 7 rolls of it back then. The expired stuff I have been finding isn't nearly as good, but it still has that amazing Ferrania color palette. The shadows don't do real well though.

Here's another recent Ferrania shot,

Peter, I love the color palette in these images. What did you use to make them? Thanks. (Great compositions too!)

Jamie Hi and thanks

Sorry for not replying earlier. I just noticed your response.

I think the building shot is just output from my camera into Lightroom and Adobe Paintshop Pro. From there I boosted contrast and selectively boosted saturation to take advantage of the colors that were naturally in the image - though in a muted way. The yellow interior lighting had to be the hero of this shot, I thought, together with the aqua glass and occasional red hints in some objects.

The other image got similar treatment to begin with but I also used Nik Analog Efex as an experiment (you will see a number of other similarly treated images on my Flickr pages - reference below in my signature link).

In photos like this I think it pays to decide what is the main subject of the photo and give that subject the chance to take centre stage as it were. Here I thought the real hero of this image would be the girls' lovely skin colors and their bright Hawaiian shirts. So, I selectively applied some texture to the background images to enhance its blur and darken it thereby de emphasising the people and scenery in the background, but left the main subjects - the girls - unaffected by this treatment. When street shooting I find it almost impossible not to get unwanted subjects in shot. The question is what to do about them. This is one way I have of handling this situation - use selective focus (One reason I like to shoot with a longer lens with shallower DOF) and some selective application of filters in post processing to focus attention where I want it.

The other significant player in this image is the lady in the centre right background looking at the girls. I knew that her positioning in the frame and her look was enough to capture the eye so felt I did not need to do more with her (I could for example have treated her the same as the girls but felt this would detract from attention on them).

Nik Color Efex has a filter called "Glamor Glow" which darkens subjects and applies something like a diffraction blur / glow. The background selectively got a little of that too - it can have a very pleasant softening effect so long as it is not overdone which can then cause it to go from soft / pretty to harsh / ugly very quickly.

That's about it really - the thing is you have to be guided by the image. I often start thinking I will go down one path when processing the image but find that this does not work as well as I thought it might with that particular image. So I try something else. Letting the image lead you in this way can produce some nice outcomes but it is a little nerve wracking as you never quite are sure where it will take you and where you will end up.

In general though I find that if I shoot in color (and I mostly do) I rather like colors that are strong but a little dark and which have been adjusted so they are more artistic than realistic.

cheers Peter
