Red Oktober 2018

Okay, girls and boys, time to dust off the FSU gear, and get to shooting. You've got all month, so no rush, and no excuses!

Since I've got a lot of my stuff boxed up while I do a reorganization of the apartment, I've only got my two best rangefinders to use, but they are matched up with two good lenses.

I found out tonight that what I had thought was a Zorki-1d, is actually a 1e model (6 international shutter speeds). The I-22 works so good on it, and if it cools down later on, it's easy to carry in a jacket pocket.

Then there is the end-of-the-line Zorki-6, which I like using the J-12 with. I finally got the camera, and lens, to quit leaking light.

Post your photos here when you get them. Anything taken October 1st through 31st with any combination of lens and camera (but one or the other must be Soviet made), so your digi snaps are accepted.

You can also join the Red Oktober Group on Flickr, and post there too.

PF

I just picked up a roll of Svema Color 125 for Red Oktober.
Now I have to decide, Zorki 4 or Kiev-2a...

Every time I pick up a Zorki or FED, the gritty viewfinder piece ends up scratching my glasses. I will need to put electric tape around the rim this time.

I'm awaiting a Zorki 3M any day now.
I will be joining the glorious effort to celebrate the skilled crafts men & women of the Krasnogorsky Zavod, looking forward to the day their chains are loosed from the tyrannical rule of oligarchs, and begin anew creating tiny spinning and clacking things.
I'll take a few snaps too.

I've got my FED2 and Zorki 1 ready for service. And as a Kievaholic, I will posting those shots on Flickr.

Thanks for the reminder, PF! Otherwise it might have slipped by. The summer doldrums are over and its time for shooting in the crisp fall weather (and winter too which is my favorite). Last time I shot my Zorki 4 it misbehaved and tore a roll of film which I have hopefully rectified by using an O-ring spacer under the film cassette (and a little hex nut under the takeup spool) so hopefully the film doesn't ride too low any more on the film plane and snag.

I'll probably go with my Kiev 60. Then again maybe the Haselbladski 88. Either way it should be fun. Every time I think of these 2 cameras I visit the Kievaholic Klub website, and get excited about using these cameras again.

Can I cheat and only use a Jupiter 3 on my IIIF? I don't have a Zorki or Kiev body?

Yes! Or even if you want to use it on a Sony. Just as long as either the lens, or camera, is a Soviet produced item (that is, before Dec 31, 1991).

I have a Zorki 4 + Jupiter 8 that I have owned for several years but never used, I guess October is going to be her lucky month.

Hmmm. Thinking of feeding some Double-X through a Zorki I with a J-3 or my FED-NKVD. The Kiev-88s haven't had any play time either these last few months.

I guess I'm game

Will have to load my Canon P with the J-12 - it has been bored for too long. Should be fun!

Speaking of Red Oktober...

The 2018 Walk To Defeat ALS is in October this year (it's always been in September before now) so it's only fitting that our team t-shirt should have this on the front

As of now they are just for team members.
If we have leftovers, we will probably sell them for donations.

Great Tshirt Colton. Was it made from a line-drawing, or a photo rendition?

It's one of 5 camera drawings I did 3 years ago. I did them from photos of my cameras, using the pen tool in Photoshop and my mouse. I have since lost the hand strength and coordination to be able to do any more.

Well they look great. Sorry to hear about the loss of ability. I was a draftsman, and I can't draw a straight-ish line with a mouse if my life depended. Keep taking pictures, I love them.

Have had a Smena 8m for years that I never used - just rediscovered it in a drawer a few days ago. So I guess that'll be my cam for Oktober.

I hope a picture of my just-recieved Zorki 3m, is ok to show a few hours short of October.
Easy to load, speeds from 1 to 1/1000 on a single knob, no self timer to intrude, no sync to fail, and the shutter actuation has a nice light trigger. Film winding is about the same as my other FSU cameras, not Leica smooth, but nothing to complain about.

I spent the afternoon on my bicycle with the camera, both the bicycle and the Zorki handle great. The single eyepiece range/view finder is big & clear, with an adjustable diopter, the range patch, while not as bright as my M2, is very quick to focus. For someone looking for an "M3 experience" at a much, much lower entry, could not do much better than this.
I recommend my Ebay seller, Alex-Ukr-Alex, who supplied it with all maintenance done. This is my 5th FSU from him with nothing but praise for his service. I think he has another one like this, just as nice.

With help from my good friend and fellow member GerryM, I finished my first roll for Red Oktober 2018. For this year, I acquired a roll of Svema Color 125, and after some internal debate, I decided to shoot it in my 1957 Zorki 4.

This is from Wednesday.

Okay, once more:

Using any FSU (Former Soviet Union manufactured before Dec 31, 1991) camera or lens in any combination, taking photos during the month of October (on the Flickr group you can post pics from several years ago if you want), posting them to either this thread, or the "Red Oktober" Group on Flickr, or both.

Rangefinder, P&S, SLR, Medium Format, or Large Format are accepted. Industar lens on a Sony is accepted. Pentax (M42) lens on a Zenit is accepted. Hellios on a Yashica is accepted. I hope you get the idea.

Those J-12's are pretty much distortion free, Mike. Good example.

Some fine entries already!

I shot two rolls of Double-X with a Zorki I over the weekend.
Should get round to developing them on Wednesday.
