Exclamation The most expensive M lens in eBay

I've just browsed through eBay and found this expensive M lens.

https://ebay.to/2Qe1XrS

There are a couple of people following and watching it. Really?

I don't think the Hologon needs to cost that much. Raid has one, so maybe he will comment about that.

Is the M mount original? Or is it modified from another mount?

not by a long shot
not sure this is either

don't get too carried away by asking prices - anyone can put a zillion dollar price tag on any lens
-- including you for that fabulously rare doorstop in your office ...

The 15mm Hologon was made in a small number, and the high asking prices reflect the rarity of this lens. My Hologon is a 16mm lens, and it was produced in a larger number than the 15mm lens, I think.

Ok, Cameraquest has the CV 15mm f4.5 LTM w/vf for $500. If I had $13K to spend I'd pay off my car.

What would you do with such a lens if you had the money for buying it? Hide it in some safe?

The Hologon 15mm f/8 was a lens made by Zeiss. 150 pieces of them got an M-mount and were marketed by Leitz. Hence is it the rarest M lens marketed by Leitz and a real collectors item. To compare: 2500 copies were made of the Noctilux 50mm f/1.2. Compared to the Hologon 15mm in M-mount not rare.

I seem to recollect reading about a one-off Leica $2m lens made for Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Al-Thani of Qatar, a 1600mm f/5.6 telephoto, I think. It was so heavy he had a custom-made Mercedes to lug it around.

This is a BIN price. They are there to catch anybody who would *really* pay that much in a special circumstance; a collector looking within an exact serial number range, or some bloke who is trying to re-acquire a memorable time via a fetish such as a lens or painting or automobile. It's quite common.

If you were to log in to eBay and bid something that BIN price would disappear and be replaced with your bid. I just now bid $100, which was refused (a good thing too). So there is also a hidden reserve minimum that is not mentioned. I think "reserves" are a scam. In a true auction a reserve is called an opening bid and it takes off from there. But eBay is not a true auction, is it.

BINs have been a part of eBay for ages. Why do people keep posting about these things? hth

I bid $200 and then even $210, but both offers were rejected.

I can't think why, you doubled the previous bid and then went one better...

Regards, David

PS: Of course the advantage of the BIN price is that it only needs one taker and you don't have to wait until the auction ends. But having said that, um...

Texas has a lottery going all the time, it's for the children . I never play, 'cause I might win, and then I wouldn't have an excuse for not buying stupid expensive stuff that no one could possibly need.

Is there anyway that I can check the "reasonable" price of a used Leica lens? It seems the sellers are setting arbitrary prices in eBay for some rare lenses.

I think That was actually a Zeiss lens made for the Hasselblad V mount wasn’t it? Or am I thinking of something else? I definitely recall seeing some photos of some sort of whale of a lens that was a custom commission but it had a “tiny” 500 series camera hanging off the back.

Wow. To put this into perspective, I bought a beautiful 2 bdrm, 2 bath mobile home in a quiet, gated 55+ senior park in Daytona Beach, Fl (and the same deal in Las Cruces, NM) with a huge, glassed in Florida room, a walk in shower, central air and heat, with a full carport on a big lot for $12,200. The home was used but in great shape. My neighbors were wonderful, the beach was a mile away, and our lot rental was $390 a month, which included water, lawn service and cable TV. The park had a rec room, pool tables, huge flat screen TV, and a big hot tub.

Occasionally I find there are compensations for getting old.
