No, the M5 is a camera for normal 35mm film, but indeed the film gate is slightly smaller than on the other Leicas. They all vary, but the M5 has the smallest of all that I've tried. That is what I wanted to say. That is why the framelines of the M5 are more precise than the others.

The biggest film gate has the early (double stroke) M3.

My F1.1 is now in the hands of someone else. End of an era. Feels weird not having it.

Though my shoulders are liking the new change with one less lens to carry around.

long fingers = M5?

I have pretty long fingers and find on an M3 I sometimes push the lens release button by accident. Now I'm really conscious of it and it feels a bit cramped. I wonder if an M5 is the answer. I've never handled an M5, but I wonder if anyone else has found this?

Because of that, I love my M5.

Yeah, sometimes it's best not to look back after taking some shots. Luckily Toronto is pretty relaxed.

Yes great shot BLKRCAT! the man beside the maniquins + the face of man on the first plane is great. Congrats!

In the last days I'm using the M5 with the Voigtländer 21mm 1.8. That combo is awesome in my hands. :-)

In the last rolls, sometimes I'm having a problem: in the first picture I have a strange "light". Here you have one example from the same roll:

After these pictures, each photo is OK, without any problem. What can it be? Do you know? Can you help me?

they aren't consistent in shape? You're developing yourself? I'd bet that it's got to be something when loading the film into the tank.

Well the leaks run the length of the film, which means its not coming from the shutter or the baseplate. It's possible it could be a door leak but the leak does look pretty random with little structure. Can you measure the distance between the leaks on that roll? Looks to be about 1 and a half frames. If the distance is the same as the width of the back door I'd say you found your culprit.

I've never had door leaks before though so I don't know what the shape should actually look like.

I have measured the distance between the two "lights" and it smaller than the door of the m5. It has 1,5 cm less than the door.

I’ve seen this sometimes with my film too. SInce it only happens at the start of the roll, I think it may be some stray light leaking through the film canister opening. I reuse my film canisters so maybe the felt on them is starting to degrade a little. That’s my theory anyway...

I'll second that as the frame numbers show them to be the first ones taken.

M5 As an Underwater Camera

To see what is still being shot with film and an M5, check out Analogue Aquatic on the Leica Blog.

It is an Aussie shooting in the surf and ocean using Velvia and an M5 in a custom waterproof case. "The meter works every time".

Tried to post a link but could not find the actual web address.

Thanks for posting the link. I am still an analogue dinosaur when it comes to computers and internet. Not exactly how you would expect an M5 to be used.

The Canon 50mm f/1.4 LTM balances well on the M5.

I have been having issues with loading film in my freshly CLA’d M5. When loaded as per the diagram on the bottom plate the film would not catch, make a horrible grinding noise and the film would jump off the spool. To get the film to load I was adding 1.5 inches of film to the outside of the spool, it would double over on itself and wind on without further issue, other than getting 35 exposures out an 36 roll of film.

I spoke to Sherry K for about 20 mins latest night and she gave me two tips on loading film for the M5, I thought I would share them here in case someone else was experiencing the same issue.

First tip, she got this from a newspaper photographer, crimp 1/8 inch of the leader so that when it is loaded it hooks on the outsiflde of the spool arm thingies (my term, not hers)

Second tip, thread the film through two of the spool arm thingies not one as shown on the diagram on the bottom plate.

Tip 2.5 after loading, replacing the bottom plate, take the slack out by using the rewind lever slowly until tension is felt.

Hope that helps
James
