Ha... Shirley's cat has found a way to look cute in a spot that's warm and helpfully in the middle of the action. Guessing a young male?

Yes, Doug - a young male, a very smoochy male, and appropriately named Pixel. He hangs around the keyboard because that is where my hands are and Pixel wants to be petted and scratched.

I think cats are the best animals. I read a comment the other day which said that cats are the only animal that was not domesticated by humans - instead, cats decided to domesticate themselves. Sounds about right.

I love the way my little girl (pictured here) sits on my chest when I am laying on my back reading - all to prevent me from paying attention to the book rather than paying attention to her. How she lays in the curve of my arm when I am working at my desk on the computer and how she talks to me incessantly when she wants something (she is half Siamese and hence very vocal). I love how in cold weather she paws at my jacket or jumper (all the time making little noises that sound like a cross between a grunt and a purr) as she begs me to be let inside where she can curl up and sleep in the warmth of my body. I love the way she waits for me on her favourite rug when I get home from work, and rolls on her back for her tummy to be scratched. I love the way at bedtime, she suddenly decides its time to play and hides under the bed to ambush me as I walk past in bare feet. All very cat-like and wonderful. And I love how a healthy cat smells. Dogs, even the most clean and healthy ones, stink. Cats do not. If anything they smell like a human baby. All designed cleverly by evolution, perhaps, to provoke parenting behaviour in humans who dutifully then feel they must care for their loved cats.

Most of all I love that fact that when a dog loves you it treats you like a god! But when a cat loves you it instead treats you like you are a member of its own family and curls up with you like a purring ball of fur. Just the way they do with their siblings when they are still kittens. The cat's bum in the face is not quite so nice but its still part of the package experience of having a cat love you and honour you with her demand for your attention.

Another article I read recently said that scientists have tested the blood of pet animals (including cats) after they had interacted with their favourite humans and found that the blood tests revealed high levels of hormones such as serotonin, oxytocin, and vasopressin - the same chemicals associated with blissful happiness and bonding that is found in the blood of humans when they are in love with another human. The animals, they concluded are in love with their humans. I would say the feeling is mutual!

Peter, lovely photos and excellent commentary. Much is in common with my small-size Cinnamon who kneads and nurses on my front, and must be held so that using the computer is a one-armed affair.

That's OK by me. My cat and I have a deal. If I am dead and she is starving she can eat me. If I am starving I can eat her. Its an arrangement we have - a kind of Kentucky stand-off.

But we just watch each other very closely.

I have to say I have come to the conclusion that cats are altogether more clever and insightful than most people give them credit for. And it would not surprise me to find my cat regards me as a dummy and a failure. She certainly regards me as her slave and her plaything. I think that's fair to say. I feed her, I clean up after her, I nurse her, I play with her, I spend hundreds of dollars on her at the vet, I let her out, then in, then out, then in - well you get the picture.

But in return she does give love and affection and she communicates with me constantly - she is a talker. She understands how to get my attention and how to get what she wants - they are like kids in this respect.

I can't say that all cats are like this. As a kid our family had one or more "moggies" (a moggie is a mongrel cat of no particular breed) and I can't recall them being particularly distinguished in any way. They slept, they caught mice, they played a bit when young and that's about it .

But my present cat is a "breed" - a Siamese / Burmese cross which is usually referred to as the Tonkinese breed. These cats are renowned as being friendly, affectionate, intelligent, playful and vocal animals who adore their humans. They are said to embody the very best attributes of both parent breeds and few if any of their shortcomings. I do concur they really are very sweet little animals that worm their way into their owners' hearts. As "talkers" I understand that this could be annoying to some people. Not me, I love the fact that she constantly prattles on. One day I might actually be smart enough to understand all of what she is saying. But I understand enouogh of it most of the time. For example she is also a delicate little thing. She does not like using the litter tray if it has not been cleaned. So she will meow at me till I clean it - then she will use it. That's the relationship we have. And as long as I do what I am told its a happy relationship.

All of which does not change the fact that I still think she is plotting to kill me.
