Why is the Black Beauty awkward?
I like mine. Flawless build and optical quality.

Why everyone has a Canon P? I bought my 1st Canon rangefinder camera yesterday. The seller told me it is a VL-2. It cost about twice as much as a worn Canon 7 in the same shop at about $200, but it is in much better condition. I'd like to know how many pieces were ever made? The camera has a precision feel to it than that of Canon 7.
The Russian Industar-50 was not included.
Cheers

As an answer to the "Why do so many have the Canon P?" question, it was popular! It's relatively simple and more common than any single earlier Canon RF, has a high magnification finder so focuses accurately and it's "cute" more so than the 7.

Just curious, between holding the grip and the trigger winder, how do you focus? With the 25mm lens you show in the photo, via scale focus?

On this particular occasion, I did scale focus. Most all of the pics were at F8, so I set the focus at about six feet, and shot away.
I do like the trigger wind. Much faster than the standard knob wind. And focusing is actually no big deal, once you advance the film, you focus and take the pic.

According to Dechert's Canon rangefinder book, about 8,450 VL2 camera's were made.

New to me Canon IID2 with CV 35mm f/2.5 lens and Leica finder. I love the magnified viewfinder in this camera but mostly I'll scale focus with this lens. The CV lens is very nice and matches the Leica hood ( 12571J ) as if they were made for each other.

Here is my VI-T. It needs an overhaul so I have never shot a single frame through it. I'll have to send it out this summer. The lens needs a ding taken out also but for $5.00 I won't complain too much, yet.....

My Canon P and recently acquired 25mm 3.5 lens. Also just received a Canon 28mm 3.5 Serenar and will post it too (and yes I wonder why I needed the 28mm in addition to the 25mm, I don't know, but it was an excellent deal!)

Forgive me for this post but I thought people could be interested. While I do not have a picture of my Canon camera (my last one being a IVSB) having now sold it I did keep some Canon lenses which I love.
A few years ago I was in Bali (there is another recent thread on that trip) and one of the lenses I took with me was the black and chrome version of the 135mm f3.5 lens as I wanted to have one option with me that provided a longer reach. And this lens was about the lightest option available to me. Plus its IQ is known to be excellent.
I think I only used it once or twice but one image I took particularly impressed me. I was on a cliff top resort overlooking Jimbaran Bay and the airport beyond and I took a shot of the airport just as part of a sequence of scene setting images.
The detail captured in the full sized image was a pleasant surprise given the distance and the inevitable haze in photographic situations like this. I found that I could read the signage on the sides of some of the planes at the airport. Out of interest I used a distance measuring tool on Google Earth to check the distance and it turned out to be 6.8 kilometers. Not bad performance for a 60 year old lens. Of course I was using it on an Olympus OMD EM 5 so it had the same field of view as a 270mm lens. The image below though not full sized is enough to give some idea. Click for a bigger version which in this version is a bit soft due to my attempt to get rid of some environmental haze and image pixelation. Even though the image is compromised by the difficult shooting circumstances I am still surprised that the lens did so well.

You are going to like that lens Colton.
I recently picked up a nearly mint 7 with a Japanese Summilux. The lens is beautiful. Took the place (for right now at least) of the Pentax 50 1.4 I converted.

Canon IID2 ( I think ) w/ W-Nikkor 28mm f/3.5. Outside the frame lines of the Leica 36mm finder is close enough to 28mm.

Looks great! I also think you'll like this lens, Colton. Incredibly versatile, with great performance for the price. Also balances well on larger cameras like the Canon 7. I use mine on the (portly) Leica M5.
I'm sure you've seen this thread for the lens. Look forward to seeing your results!
