Recently I bought my first decent camera-phone and this is the first pic taken with it that I uploaded to my flickr. To a certain extent it confirms what I have been thinking, even saying: that a camera phone in certain situations is the best camera, of course not technically, but for being more readily accepted, by "subjects", than a dedicated camera. I had just left a disco with a few local friends opposite the street. Half of the people had their handphone out taking pics of themselves and each other. Me walking up to this lady and doing a snap with my handphone seemed to be a normal thing to do

kuaan, I fully agree on the advantages of using a smart phone in street photography but I also find that I'm not having much fun using one.

right Peter, so far I have hardly used a smart phone to take photos but I already understand a bit what you mean. That night sometimes focus did not lock and I was unable to release, if it did the delay was very disturbing, I never quite knew when exactly the photo was taken. However, after having used adapted manual lenses for 10 years suddenly I am longing for a cam with AF, possibly even zoom, but it must be light, small and inconspicuous. I am tempted to get a Sony RX100iV or V, better though first I tried a cheaper option, the very small, if collapsed, 16-50 kit zoom for my NEX5n.

This dude was weaving through the crowd at a recent Velvet Underground (John Cale & Friends) gig in Liverpool UK. I got him to turn around for my camera (phone cam - Huawei P10, incidentally a fabulous phone camera)

Maybe this photo of a group of prisoners from Parchman Farm in Mississippi qualifies as a "street portrait". Parchman Farm in rural Mississippi was considered one of the most brutal prisons for almost a century but is quite progressive today. It has always been totally self supporting as a farm and at 28 square miles, one of the largest in land area.

These prisoners are minimum and medium security "green and whites" denoting the color of their stripes. They were doing municipal repair work in Clarksdale Mississippi including "Sarah's Kitchen" a local eatery and nighttime music venue. Sarah had prepared their lunch but they could not eat without OK from their missing security guard. Two of the prisoners were out on a search mission looking for the guard. We had some very interesting conversations while waiting for the guard to return.

Another Parchman Farm inmate in Clarksdale but shot about 6 years later. He had finished his job at the Sunflower County courthouse and but the bus did not show up to take him back to the prison which was about 25 miles away. I offered him a ride as I was going that way but he was hesitant to leave.
