W/NW Made of stone, built or shaped by human hands

Stone has such wonderful forms and textures, from polished marble to rough-hewn sandstone. It's the material of some of humankind's earliest tools; in the hands of master masons it reached majestic heights in medieval cathedrals; formed practical yet beautiful cobbled roads underfoot, and has been fashioned into sculpture by artistic hands for thousands of years.

Share your pictures of stone in all its human-shaped manifestations and beauty, from the humble to the sublime.

The Monastery Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), Klimatia, Kerkyra (Corfu) par Sparrow ... Stewart Mcbride, on ipernity

... the building is probably only 12th or 13th century, but I bet the plinth it sits on is really ancient

Love the "Old World" construction. When we got home to our vinyl siding, it just didn't feel the same, you know.

It's amazing how massive things are built.
I'm always blown away by these construction methods too!
This is the area where my family in Switzerland is from....Valle Maggia up above Lago Maggiore.

Here are a couple closer so you can see just how massive the weight its. All of this is solid Granite.
Really impressive work.

The Cardiff giant. Not the original, but a copy that resides in the Fort museum, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The original was carved from a piece of gypsum mined in Fort Dodge, which explains the local connection.
