Roger Hicks -- Author of The Rangefinder Book

Roger Hicks is a well known photographic writer, author of The Rangefinder Book, over three dozen other photographic books, and a frequent contributor to Shutterbug and Amateur Photographer. Unusually in today's photographic world, most of his camera reviews are film cameras, especially rangefinders. See www.rogerandfrances.com for further background (Frances is his wife Frances Schultz, acknowledged darkroom addict and fellow Shutterbug contributor) .

I am almost certain that Dave and Roger are off conspiring to absolutely end the reign of digital and the return to black and white film--and cheap sources to process...:-)
Actually, I miss both fellers, but the new panties thread will be the ultimate decider..

We really should not even worry about this. Strong words coming over the aether? In my neighborhood there are more substantial things to worry about.

Chris Crawford and Clayne - you have both had your say and as the OP I would prefer that you take your discussion elsewhere. Please do not continue it in this thread.

Thank you.

A few days away from RFF and I find Roger and Dave, who've I met in person and found to be the nicest of people, gone. I'm disappointed.

Enough said, at least from me.

I think Dave did the right thing in distancing himself from RF. He was over reacting to many situations that I'm sure wouldn't have normally bothered him because of what he currently has on his plate personally.

I hope he's OK ... nice guy!

As for Roger ... he's a big boy and I'm sure he'll figure out his next move whatever that may be. Returning or otherwise I'm glad to have been a part of his internet circle, as I was with Al Kaplan who left us for far more serious reasons.

I'll will miss Roger's presence on Rff, and for whatever reason he felt compelled to leave, it is a pity that he has done so.

Roger was an interesting character and I do hope he returns at some stage. Slightly eccentric with a sharp wit and never personal in his comments when disagreeing emphatically with other members.

I liked the way he always addressed each of us individually when responding to a post ... ie Dear Keith etc. Quite old school, genteel and extremely well mannered.

Man, I do miss Al. He was wonderful.

Totally missed why Roger left. I do remember when and why he left APUG. I have had a couple of 'internet friends' who got banned here; not sure if I agreed but I can certainly see why it happened.

No, I am far from the inside track of the politics here.

I quite normally try to qualify statements that I do not know to be true, and I thought the qualification was implied and the statement merely a suggestion, nothing further implied.

I am sorry if it is not.

Or am I reading more in to your question? Always a possibility with written communication.

Other than a few members here, I mostly recognize folks from like minded, or not, comments on images and the images they post.

I would think the interest and numbers of posts in such a short window imply this topic to reflect more than the usual interest.

I see a fair number of posts from members I recognize who have put up some quite good images and reasonable comments.

Obviously, some toes are easier to step on than others, not normally my intention, but it seems some are "clicking their heels three times".

Regards, John

I will miss Roger's expertise, insight, and his humor (usually). But he loved--and likely still loves--an argument and that results in combativeness. I know firsthand. But it was becoming clear that he and at least one specific moderator were getting into repeated battles. And moderators tend to win those battles.

For the record, I have no idea what was the final straw; I've got a lot going on in my life lately and can't spend as much time here as usual. I am sure it was a thoughtful decision.

I miss arguing with the old bugger ... he could be relied on as strong advocate (devils' or otherwise) and not get personally offensive or insulting in the debate

Dear Mike,

relevant paragraph highlighted. I met with Bill in Arles last year and we discussed Land Rovers, American Healthcare and Tibet. He seemed fine.

Unfortunately I can not post a picture of my panties in the other thread, since they are off for CLA. And I am talking full dis-assembly and adjustment to spec, not the simple oil flooding that is so common around here.

Cheers,

R.

I recall Bill Mattock's last few posts here being very acerbic and argumentative although he did have a sharp tongue regardless.
But there was a distinct change in the waning days.

I guess creative people are like that.
Heck, I'm like that!...but the difference is I'm lazy.

I recall somewhere in this saga, a post by the Chief Bartender allowing as to how Mr. Hicks' alleged "departure" was simply a rumor. OTOH, I'm an old geezer, so maybe it's a senior moment

Not true. I posted that contrary to rumor, Roger has a member account here -- which was and is accurate.

Mattocks was/is a nut but he could logically destroy almost anyone on this forum.

He would demolish the ignorant point by point, and very intelligently and accurately. He had solid knowledge and didn't take any guff from fools.

Of course, there was also someone "who shall not be named" who actually created a Bizarro alt/RFF which was psychotic but hilarious. That's as far as I'll go with that.

Indeed, reminds me of the title of the Shakespearean play "Much To Do About Nothing."

Just for context, how many people were murdered in the last week in Iraq? Chicago? Trashcanistan? Or starved to death in Kenya, Zimbabwe, etc.....?

Roger has been, for me, a teacher that I really, really liked, and learned very much from. So, I would give him a pass on some moderation.

For instance, I disagreed him on something, too bad it was a political difference, and my posts were air brushed. Roger's were not. I accepted that, because he is an important Mentor for us. Plus, I shouldn't be discussing politics on the site.

Well, following countless kind messages I'm back, but on Monday Frances I are down to Arles to take down our exhibitions, so I may not be around much for the next week or ten days either.

No, it wasn't the pond, and the previous message on this thread purporting to be from me wasn't.

Also, for some reason, the way the site reads on the screen is really weird: far too wide, with a huge left-hand section (avatar, general information) and some information stacked on top of other bits. My PMs are unreadable. Anyone know why this might have happened?

Cheers,

R.
