Would the real Leica please stand up?

I brought my M3 to a wedding last weekend, and had a lot of fun talking to people about it (including the photographer!).

But something one person said struck me as, well, interesting. She said, "I have a real Leica, an M9".

I told her politely that many would say the M3 was "realer" (including me!).

Obviously, I chose my forum here carefully, but what do you all think?

She was right and you are too!

However, the realest Leica is the M5! I just found out.

Pfff. Both your cameras are just Leica A wannabes.

Haha, this reminds me of these religious objections, that having sex with a strange partner or in a strange way is "not natural". If it happens, it means it is natural, just like all cameras with the registered Leica logo coming out of Leica factories are "real Leicas". In this sense, I'm afraid, an M9 is as real as an M3 - but no more real !

I'd politely smile, say "oh that's great" and walk away. I love M9 and certainly wouldn't say it's not real Leica, but I'd never say what she said to a person holding an M3. I mean, that's just silly.

More sinister part of me kinda wishes that she goes home, looks online and learns about the heritage, and realizes she made a very silly (embarrassing, really) comment...

There can be only one; bash them together until one stops working.

I'm betting the M3 finder will separate with the first blow, then the M9 Mg/Al will start cracking.

This is true. It was created when the intention was to build the best camera to actually use as a camera. Which is why the form changed.

The outcry from Leica owners, not users, made sure that the following cameras - to the present day - would not be real Leicas anymore. They would be driven primarily by style, then function.

So yes, the last real Leica was the M5.

Very easy to determine:

Does the camera say "Leica" on it?

Yes: Real Leica

No: Not a real Leica

Leica M3 and M9 are real Leicas. In contrast to the M8.2, MP and M, they are also integer Leicas.

(mostly joking)

Well, Leica from Leitz era could be called "realer" because they are Leica (Leitz Camera = LeiCa) as product! Today it's Leica's (brand name) M9 or M type 240 (product name), etc.

Again, just joking. All Leica are real Leica unless it's M5!! (completely joking!)

Does that make the iPhone imaginary, and if you try to square an iPhone do you end up minus one phone?

The real Leica was created early last century when someone decided it would be cool to make a little body that could take stills using movie film. Nothing else has really mattered since!

Oh goody! I have a Mini, a Mini II, and a Mini 3 that all say Leica and have red dots. That's three real Leicas! Almost forgot, I also have a IIIf RDST. I guess that's a Leica too.

Did she have it with her? The real Leica is the one that was there, taking pictures.

Catty, insecure remark from that woman.
I've seen it happen with other things: purses, watches, shoes, clothes. Even pianos (happened to me when I bought my wife a Steinway grand).

An insecure person will always find a way to try to transfer their anxieties to you.

Ignore her. If she wasn't carrying it with her, there is no proof that she even owns one.

What is "a real Leica"?
Standard Leica, M3, M6, and M9.

I can tell you what isn't a real leica, and that's the leica SL. I finally got to see and play with one.....horrendous.
Forget what image quality it produces, i just don't want to walk around with a surface to air rocket launcher.

Ah ... but the real Leica man shrugs his shoulders and moves on, confident in knowing he answers to no one.

She was either abysmally ignorant, or else she was teasing you with a tongue in cheek comment, perhaps designed to determine your attitude toward digital photography.

Both are real, obviously. If in doubt, do the quick and dirty reality check: throw both of them from a balcony (or the nearest precipice) and if, as expected, they cause a massive dent on the pavement, well, they are real enough. Yes, an expensive but definitive way to decide the matter. It has to be said, however, the two Ms do embody different designs (there are similarities too, of course). So, the question is which one is more, how should we say, fundamental to Leica? The statement by the lady obviously indicates her preference for one them. But you don't want that, you want the matter to be resolved without resorting to preferences, for obvious reasons. Well, here goes: The design (in this case the M3) which is temporally prior can also be claimed to be causally ancestral to the later one. That doesn't make the latter design somehow flawed or inadequate or whatever. It's just that one of the two is fundamental in a way the other isn't (as a matter of fact) for the first.

There, problem solved.

that or perhaps she was jealous of the attention you were getting with your M3 that she had to announce to everyone that she also owns a Leica
