Photogs / Photo Exhibits This is the place to discuss a particular Photographer (work, style, life, whatever), as well as to post Gallery and Museum Photo Exhibitions and your own impressions of them. As we march on in this new digital world, it is often too easy to forget about the visual importance of the photographic print, as well as their financial importance to the photographer. It is also interesting to remember that some guy named Gene Smith shot with lenses that many lens test reading "never had a picture published in their life" amateurs would turn up their their noses at, as being "unacceptable." |

Photos of my gallery show this past weekend.
This past weekend (May 18-19), I had a joint gallery exhibition at a small local gallery, along with a local painter. I had 10 photos in the show, and the painter had 4 oil paintings, plus 2 of his sketches that were part of his process.
The show was arranged by the gallery owner, but I had total freedom as to what I wanted to show. I chose 10 color images (all 35mm film) from a body of work that I have been slowly building up over the past 6 years. I chose the images in pairs and so I displayed them in pairs.
Before the opening, I managed to get a few photos of the work all hung in the gallery. I thought some of you here might like to see how it looked.
And here's me next to some of my photos.

Nice show! I like the idea of "pairs". Could you share your thought process on the pairing? Composition, color, subject? Cheers, jc

Congrats! Ironically even on screen, it comes across that they look amazing printed. I think you made an excellent selection, what I see here looks even better together than what I've seen you post on this forum. If it's not too much work, could you post the scans together in one place, like here in this thread? I'd love to see this selection of images head on.

Congratulations. Well deserved. I have admired your photographs online for a long time, especially your colour work, learning from your posts and even attempting to emulate your achievement with very limited success. Again, well done.

It was a really great show, Colton. Since you are getting bigger turnouts, maybe more elbow room for next show?

The idea to pair the photos really came out of the selection process. I have been building this body of work for the past 6 years, and in the past 2 years I have been making selections with the goal of eventually publishing a book. The images for the show all came from that much larger selection of work. As you can probably imagine, it's not easy picking 10 images from a body of work that has hundreds of images
I started by just selecting my 10 favorites, but those images didn't really show the full extent of the idea behind the body of work. Then I started selecting images based on particular sub themes (shadows, shape, color) and I found that narrowed the overall idea into different theme altogether, and what I really wanted was a selection of images from each of the sub-themes that showed different parts of the whole of the general idea. As the overall selection of images came together in part from the process of making a book, I thought of selecting images in pairs as if they were on opposite pages, and found that in selecting pairs, I ended up with a selection that showcased more the entire scope of the body of work. Then I thought, why not display the images in pairs as if they were in a book. In the end, I think it worked really well.

I like the way you think, pairs is a great idea. Was that Talent, OR or Medford? I think about you every time I go Portland to visit friends and family. The show looks wonderful.

Nicely done, Colton. Congratulations! I too love how you chose pairings of images. The themes resonate and the set is impressively cohesive.

Sweet! Make sure to hold onto those gallery photos, especially since they’re digital. They can be pretty important for researching the exhibition history of an artist.
