Go Back   Rangefinderforum.com > Cameras / Gear / Photography > Being a Photographer > Photogs / Photo Exhibits

Photogs / Photo Exhibits This is the place to discuss a particular Photographer (work, style, life, whatever), as well as to post Gallery and Museum Photo Exhibitions and your own impressions of them. As we march on in this new digital world, it is often too easy to forget about the visual importance of the photographic print, as well as their financial importance to the photographer. It is also interesting to remember that some guy named Gene Smith shot with lenses that many lens test reading "never had a picture published in their life" amateurs would turn up their their noses at, as being "unacceptable."

Dear Helen,

I know you only through your work on this site, and now Eric's beautiful work which I'd never seen before.
The work outlives us.
My thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Helen,

Let Eric know that he has people who greatly admire his work that he doesn't even know about. I am one, and wish I had found out sooner.

Best wishes for the both of you.

Helen,

It is with great sorrow that I post this, having no idea beforehand that Eric was suffering and now, your latest post. Life has carried us far away but it is important for me to send you our sympathy and thoughts to you both. You have been an inspiration for me and others for a long time. You continue to do the same even in your time of grief.

Give Eric a hug from the two of us.

May you both continue in love.

Dearest Helen, I have been thinking of you and Eric so much in the last few days. I won't say that everything happens for a reason, or that Eric will be at peace, because even though these things are true, you will feel otherwise. Rage, disbelief, sorrow, it will all happen, and it will be some time before you emerge.

But I will say that you and Eric will meet again, as the love you have shared is timeless and boundless. Let your boundless time and deep memories together be the hands that cradle your heart into the future. You and Eric have the thoughts and prayers of all of us, of so many.

I don't read the posts here as frequently as I used to so I missed this. Helen, I'm so sorry. I recently lost someone I loved and also one of my best friends. This year has kinda sucked. I suppose it's a fact of growing older. I hope you maintain the strength to get through these days. My prayers, dear lady.

Helen: we do not know each other well, but I have come to look for the elan evident in your RFF posts over the years. I am so sorry that this is happening to you both. I don't know how much of a comfort words are -- but it is all we have in Internet-land. I think people want to gather when one of their own is hurt -- like elephants, like a pod of whales, like dogs who howl or keen knowing that something is not quite right. It doesn't help much . . . but it is all we can do. As I read through the above, I see so many folks who wish they could help. I think we all do. Our thoughts go with you.

Helen,

I’m very sorry to hear. I can’t imagine what you are going through. I’ve lost parents and friends, but not a partner. If you need a ear to listen, if there’s a way I can help please reach out.

Helen,

I have “known” you for years through RFF and Flickr and always realized that Eric was a strong presence in your life—though I had never communicated with him. The images that you have shared in this thread bring more to that “strong presence” and show a person filled with warmth, happiness and thoughtfulness—and a person skilled and passionate with a camera himself. I love some of the images in this thread (e.g., Eric’s picture of the man with the fedora; his picture of you in a ghostly illusion with rangefinder in hand; Eric’s homage on the streets of Harlem; your picture of Eric half in light, half in dark; and your picture below it of Eric wearing a cap with such an amazingly playful look on his face). I didn’t know that Eric shared this passion for photography with you. I love how skilled you both are in capturing each other’s characters with such knowing, vibrancy, and creativity. It really speaks to the magic of photography and how it permeates all and remains forever.

Eric and you are in my thoughts across these days and weeks. May things be as good as they can be.

Helen,

My condolences on your loss. Reach out to your friends here and elsewhere in your life. You will be amazed at how happy they will be to do whatever they can to help you through this time.

From your posts, it seems that Eric lived his life as much on his own terms as any of us can and that he was able to make a conscious decision to spend the end of it at home with you. That is admirable.

My deepest condolences, Helen. Like others on the board, we've never met, but I could tell through your photos what Eric meant to you. Thank you for sharing such personal grief with us. I hope that in sharing, we can help to carry some of that grief for you.

So sorry to hear the sad news, Helen. I never had a chance to meet him in person, but he lived and will living in your wonderful photos of him and in the memory of those who had the pleasure of knowing him in person. Also his last poem brought tears to my eyes.

I am very sorry Helen. I cannot fathom the kind of grief you have right now. As I said in an earlier communication, I sensed that you and Eric lived a life of great creativity, and I hope you find solace in continuing with that philosophy.
