28mm summicron observation/question

Hello All,

I've picked up a 28mm summicron 2nd hand and have questions. On film, it seems to be best wide open and in the close to middle distances. Stopped down, it appears to make nothing stand out as being sharp or particularly clear from middle distance to infinity. I've compared it with my old voigtlander 28/3.5 and 28mm biogon and both seem better in daylight, except for flare resistance.

Apples to oranges, but my 50 lux v2 is much sharper wide open and stopped down.

Is that common with this lens, or do I need to send this one to be checked?

Thanks for the thoughts,

Terry

my copy is sharp throughout, on digital. especially on the monochrom. have not used it on a film M.

doesn't sound right - have you considered returning it?

I have used this lens since the release of the M8 and continue to use it on the M9. Mine follows the traditional characteristic of increasing sharpness through f8. Leica's MTF curves, available on line, confirm this performance. It is a superb lens. I have not used it with film though.

Thanks guys, sounds like I need to have this one checked. Since I got it second hand, and at a good price, I can afford to have it checked and adjusted.

It is likely that something is misaligned. What is puzzling is that it seems to be less sharp as you stop down. Summicron 28 is basically sharp as tack at any aperture.

Picked it up in January from popflash, so it's probably too late for any returns. Reviewing what I've shot with it, the overcast or indoor shots so far are the ones I'm unhappy with. May be more a character thing than sharpness, after looking at shots from other users. I'll try b&w for a while before sending it in.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Terry
