Sad to report that influential director Agnès Varda passed away. Before becoming a film director, Varda was formally educated as a photographer and art historian at the École des Beaux-Arts
. Although she became increasingly well-known in the 50's and the 60's as one of the leading voices (a female one, no less) of the Rive Gauche
cinema movement (itself strongly associated with Nouvelle Vague)
, she always retained her love of photography. In fact she would come to say that still photography inspired sometimes her films.
See below a link with some of her photos. They are perhaps typical in terms of style of the period but I still find them interesting. Varda was known as a left-wing feminist even as she worked within the tradition of documentary realism, both for her films and photography: a combination of interests that is rather hard to come by today.
