I was advised by the seller when I bought this lens last year that it once belonged to LeicaTom on RFF.

Thanks!! Both Zeiss Sonnars (the Jena from 1943 and the Opton from the 1950s) have been wonderful surprises, especially in black and white with the Jena and in color with the Opton.

Great pictures from Steve and Andreas!

Nikon S2, Nikkor-S.C 50mm f/1.4, 400-2TMY/Adox MCC 110.

The old Nikkor is also a Sonnar.

Erik.

thank you Erik and for your great photos, very much recognizable as one of the genres that you are excelling in

I have used my Sonnar Takumar, supposedly the only "normal" lens with Sonnar scheme ever made for the 35mm medium, much too little.
The Takumar f2/58mm's characteristics I find very attractive, another pic of cosmos flowers

Very nice flower shot!

You mean for the 35mm reflex cameras, for the rangefinders there are more, such as Jupiters, Nikkors, Serenars and Voigtländers.

Main problem seems to be the focus shift. Nippon Kogaku made twelve optically different Sonnar versions before they finally went for the Gauss type.

Nikon made an f/1.4 version and an f/2 version. The f/1.4 version suffers from weak corners and the f/2 from distortion (my experience). I prefer weak corners over distortion.

Erik.

yes, of course , exactly Erik, I forgot to add the "SLR" or "reflex cameras"!!!
Of rangefinder Sonar normal lenses I own a Nikkor-S.C f1.4 5cm ( Sonnar too, right? ) CZJ Sonnar f1.5/50, Canon LTM f1.5/50mm and a Jupiter 8. The Nikkor renders much to my lking but it's mount, or rather my self made adapter to focus make it's use a bit cumbersome, the f1.5 lenses may have some coating damage or do they really loose contrast "that" easily? The Takumar may be my favorite but for any more serious opinion first I have to shoot and get to know them more, all of them!

Personally I have no experience with the Serenars, but what I know is that Canon used some chemical ingredient in the glass that causes haze.

The 50mm f/1.2 suffers from this too, unfortunately, because if not it would be a beautiful lens. It is not a Sonnar, however.

You are very much right again Erik! I don't remember for sure if mine had a haze which, surprisingly, I was able to get rid of mostly?
because the lens looked quite clean when I took it's photo:

Canon LTM f1.5/50mm
by andreas, on Flickr

but right now, I just checked it, it has a rather strong haze across the full diameter of an inner element!
Makes me think that it may have had the same haze all along and that I took that photo of the lens in a way so that it does not show much of it.
Not cleanable alright, nevertheless I may open it one of these days to see if I can get rid just a bit of the haze.
a sample:

there is an earlier sample I had posted in this thread, post 39 on page 1, again against light:

With haze, it is always difficult. The Summaron 35mm f/3.5 from Leitz also suffers from it, but that is easy to remove. After some time however, it is again there.

Steve, thank you for your compliment!

My sample of the Canon 50/1.5 LTM is very clean. Some recent photos taken with that lens are in posts 155 and 162 above. Here's another one:

My non-Serenar Canon 50/1.5 developes haze periodically on the lens surface just behind the aperture blades. Thankfully, it wipes off easily. Most of the coating on this surface looks to have been eaten away by fungus long ago, so I assume that's why the haze always reappears.

that makes all the difference..haze that can easily be removed! ( unlike that of my M-Rokkor f2.8/28mm )
I guess it had some haze when I took this last year, here I like the effect

Right Peter, thank you so much for your expertise! Mine also says Canon, not Serenar, I just had opened it and wiped it clean. Had done that before, remembered when opening, also noticing that, for easy cleaning, I had not tightened it very strongly

love it Erik, the many layers and depth, the unique main subjects and here including you. By now you have made deep enough impression that it will happen that I will try to imitate some of that
Amazing that it's new, I'd rather expected that it had been taken 30 or 40 years ago.

Steve, more gorgeous photos from you and your Zeiss Jena Sonnar! It gave me momentary GAS, until I checked some used prices online. I'll just enjoy vicariously through your posts.

Lots of lovely shots here. This one of my son enjoying a warm winter's day.

I'm particularly admiring the strong technical and artistic qualities of this shot, Steve. A very good performance by the lens and the human behind it.

re: "Bingley"
Steve, your pics almost always have dense content front to back, not just in the foreground.
Complex design...very interesting work.
