I love the look of the 35mm uncoated Elmar. The images I saw by James Ravilious made me want the 35mm Elmar. One day I hope to find an affordable, clean, nickel one to use on the Leica II.

Utrecht imho is much nicer than Amsterdam, Erik. It's so much cleaner and less crowded...

Then-and-now photo taken in the town of Pont-Brocard 73 years apart;
On the left is Joseph De Freitas (Yonkers NY) of the 41st Armored Infantry Regiment in July 1944. On the right a current active US service member taken with a Leica IIIc and a 1938 5cm f/1.5 Sonnar LTM conversion with Double-X.

I spent some time talking to an elderly lady who lived across the street from this house. She said she remembered seeing the soldier cooking up the squad's rations and saw the photographer take the photo.

I showed her some other photos taken in the village on that day in 1944. Nearly couldn't get the book back from her

Hah, I was wondering who of the RFF-crew Allen had met at Lytham. He mentioned meeting you, but he didn't know your name.

Possibly. Or a Speed Graphic given the official Signal Corps marker.
The ground has been raised, and the original concrete boarder has been removed.

If I studied the original photo a bit better when taking this one I would've taken it from a better matching perspective. But I was already leaning over a parked car when I took it, though.

Could be that the original shot was taken with the photographer kneeling. It is clear that a wide-angle lens was used. So not a TLR, but also not a 35mm. The DOF is too shallow. Interesting.

De Freitas also appears to have been a relatively short fellow compared to Drake in my photo, another bit of perspective I would not have been able to match.

Sold my pre-war uncoated Elmar 90mm 4.0 tonight. Very nice lens to have and hold, but I never used it...
Only have my nickel Elmar 50mm left now.

Still wanting the nickel Elmar 35mm for my little Leica but can't afford it. Maybe someday...
