I could open up the scanner and the culprit was the geartrain belt which had got out of its pulleys. It turned out to be an easy fix and the scanner was resurrected. That was a good opportunity to clean the inner side of the scanner glass.

I've found the Epson's are pretty easy to open up, I hope it's as simple as this!
