I'd love to see some film work with the new VM.

I had a chance to handle one of these on Friday. It surely is a gorgeous piece of glass. Even if it photographed like the bottom of a Coke bottle I think I would be tempted to buy it just to fondle.

I second that emotion. But is it possible to mount on a film camera?

Yes, it's an M-mount lens.

The lens is available both in Sony E and Leica M mounts.

Depends how picky you are. Over at FM (in this thread starting around here) there has been some discussion and comparison of the E and M mount versions. It would appear the Sony version is better optimized for use on Sony cameras - better edge/corner performance at wider apertures.

Did you use the hood ;)

LOL! Yes, I used the official overpriced Voigtlander hood! But hey, it's a damn nice hood, cast and then machined aluminum, fits to the lens, not screwed into the filter threads - well worth the money.

And, thank you for the "Lovely shots" comment, much appreciated.

I think prefer the look of the Nokton 35/1.4.

These remind me of my 35mm Nokton though the oof areas aren't quite as clinical as the 35mm IMO.

Keith I would guess you are talking about f1.4 Nokton, right?
... and if so, I would agree.

The oof this new 40/1.2 is pretty exceptional just from what Iím seeing on a digital interface.

fotomeow 12-22-2017 18:20

Mike that first pic of the different tree leaves (maple?) with pond in back is phenomenal.
It really brings out the oof qualities of the lens at different distances .... well done.

And if you are entertaining requests, I’m dying to see some BW shots

bayernfan 12-22-2017 19:18

are the majority of these images shot at f/1.2? i'd like to see a series shot at f/2.

oldwino 12-23-2017 07:20

If I mount one of these to my Leica TL2, could I consider it to be a “poor man’s Hexanon 60/1.2”?

jonmanjiro 01-27-2018 00:26

The daylight bokeh shots are great and all, but what's the lens like for shooting at night? How's the coma at f1.2? I would love to see what this lens does wide open at night (particularly scenes with neon lights) at (or near) infinity.

Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 Nokton Appreciation Thread

Hey all, the new 40mm Nokton is a dream. In m-mount, it's very compact, light and creates lovely images. At 1.2 it is sharp (so long as the image is in focus), but not quite as bitingly sharp as some other modern lenses (the Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 zm for example). It is contrasty and creates saturated looking colors. The oof rendering is interesting...there can be some onion rings and hard edges but also smoothness and very pleasing softness...still trying to figure it out.

At any rate, those are my thoughts. Here are some pictures.

I notice that Robert White in the UK describes the M mount version as "Optically the same as the E-Mount but slightly adjusted so it can be worked by both film and digital platforms ".

I wonder what that means and is there much real significance between them.

Gregm61 09-11-2018 01:07

Sounds like marketing fluff. It’s M mount so it fits both film and digital Leica M bodies is probably the extent of it.
